Yes you have to breed them.

I'm a little surprised that the person you're buying the goat from didn't answer all your questions before you bought the goat. They should have!
To answer your question I'd have to know some things about the goat. Is she a kid or yearling or is she older? If she is a kid or what they call a dry yearling she has never been bred and won't be milking until she kids, 5 months after she gets bred.
If she's an older doe she may have kidded this year and still be milking. As late in the year as it is she may be drying off (stopping producing milk) or not. Some goats that are very productive can milk for years without kidding while others can't seem to keep milking for more than 6 months.
Then there is the precoccious milker. This is a goat who will come into milk without being bred. It doesn't happen often but it does happen. So yes, sometimes a doe will milk without ever having kids.
So, if your goat has never been bred you'll have to breed her before you'll get milk unless she's a precoccious milker and that's not likely. If she's been bred and milked before she may still be milking. If you do not want to milk her, don't. Her udder will get very full and that pressure will stop the milk cells from producing milk and in a month or so her body will have reabsorbed most of the milk.
But you really need to ask your questions of the former owner. They'll know this goat best. And FYI goats do not do well as a single pet. You really need to have 2 or more goats for them to be really happy. And if you're goat ain't happy you're not going to be happy either!

You do need to breed them. Here is a funny story about that: my college roommate was raised on a farm and her mom bought a dairy goat. They raised the goat for a while and taking it to the vet all they had was the car and it was always terrible trying to wrestle it into the car each time. Then when she was old enough they took her in the car to be bred so they could get the milk and the offspring and now they cannot pause when getting into the car or the goat tries eagerly to get in the car with them. No problems getting her to the vet now - what a night it must have been. Hilarious!

They will have milk before being bred. My family raised goats my entire childhood; female goats, and each of them were able to produce milk, even without bringing a male goat into the picture. Pretty interesting stuff, I think.

Just like in cows, the mother won't produce milk until they've been bred and are giving birth to a baby. Then as you continue to milk them they keep producing. If they dry up, then you breed them again and start the whole process over again.

I milked a cow one time and that became sufficient. The cow exceeded directly to the whole beyond over and spilled all the milk. My Gramme took care of our associates 3 cows while their son had to bypass to the scientific institution faraway from residing house. She informed me, sweetheart you valuable can p.c.. a guitar greater desirable than you could milk a cow. I p.c.. a guitar pitifully. lol

Gosh, where do you live? Personally, I wouldn't even consider breeding with a goat. I think that may be illegal anyways.
