There is some evidence that seems to point to Captain Preston's innocence. Many people close to him did not hear him give the order to fire despite his order to load the muskets. In the confusion of a crowd throwing snowballs, sticks and insults at the soldiers, it would be easy for them to think they received an order to fire. In fact, as noted in the testimony, many in the crowd were calling them to fire. Because of the lack of evidence, it is not hard to see why the jury found Captain Preston innocent. The effect of this verdict was much greater than the Crown could ever have guessed. The leaders of the rebellion were able to use it as proof of Britain's tyranny. For example, Paul Revere created a famous engraving that he entitled, "The Bloody Massacre perpetrated in King Street".

Since the presence of British troops were already putting a huge toll on peoples' minds in Colonial America, the Boston Massacre was the perfect opportunity for colonists to lash out at Britan. Though it is not fully known who shot the first bullet that started the Boston Massacre (the British troops or the Colonists), the Colonists blamed it on the British, and claimed that they were the ones imposing violence upon the Colonists, that THEY shot the first shot. Of course, since so many people hated the British troops being there, and were angry at Britan's monarchy, they believed the Colonists over the troops, and told other Colonists that they troops were there to harm everyone, and only meant harm. Thus being, that the Colonists started making drawings, and posting them in the Colonial 'newspapers' of the Boston Massacre, depicting the British troops as starting it, and purposely trying to harm the Colonists. These articles and pictures influenced the public's opinion into believing that the troops were out to get them, and only meant harm.

I hope this helped! You can change up my wording however you'd like. Good luck!
