Land grants, but lots of people couldn't afford to move, or needed cash in a hurry, so they sold them to speculators.

There was a lot of land speculation in the early national period.

I seem to remember that George Washington was given a grant of a large section along the Mississippi River. I remember it being in western Kentucky, and I think it crossed the river into Illinois.

If they lived to the end of the war they got land grants.
