Well, I would say socks for these reasons: The will stop blisters They will soak up the sweat and keep your trainers hygienic Socks add a little padding to your feet You are right it is a personnal preferance but there are some things that you have to do to keep yourself from being hurt (a close example I can give is elestoplasts on the nipples for a half marathon - not a good look but has to be done to stop them rubbing raw and bleeding - think thats simular example to socks and blisters) So how to get up at 5:00? Well, the best way is to go to bed 2 1/2 hours earlier than you would normally so that you get a good nights sleep. Some of the other ideas are good, for example having a timer on a light. One technique I use is to put the alarm clock on beeps and on the other side of the room - I have to get upto turn it off. Now as for some of the other ideas mentioned here - the answer about coffee is half right, it will work if you are tired but not if you have slept well. There is some research that caffiene helps with running, though unfortunalty not in the form of coffee (you can get caffienated sports drinks). Orthopedic wards full of runners? Well that might be sort of true, but surely not from wearing or not wearing socks!! Again, there was a report that runners actually suffer fewer illnesses and injuries than non runners (for example, OK there might be a few injured knees for example, but also a lot fewer heart problems, and runners tend to look after other aspects of their lives such as not smoking).
