Whats up? if you dont want to pay for the things we need because westminster has stolen our oil broken every promise, closed our schools, hospitals and sundry other things (to many to list)

Why are you so afraid of our referendum? it would solve your money problems when we go our own way and we WILL!!.

I don't understand WHY the Scots want to though, that's my problem with it. Without meaning to be insulting, Scotland is quite significantly poorer than England - in terms of real wealth and in terms of jobs. Westminster doesn't hold an awful lot of power in Scotland any more - and Scotland has their version of just about every major government agency to boot.

Also Scotland has benefitted quite a lot from the arrangement; if you are part of a larger country then people are much more likely to listen to you (at the EU for instance if it was just the 5 million people of Scotland petitioning for something the other are much less likely to listen than to the voice of the 60 million people in the UK), Scotland DOES get quite a bit of tax from England too. I'm not quite sure how you'd hope to fund institutions such as the NHS if you only had Scottish money to pay for it for instance. Perhaps it's possible; I'm not particularly clued up on it.

Now as I see it I think Scotland should get a referendum on the subject. If Scotland really wants to be independent then Scotland should be. But personally I don't see why you'd want to be, other than for nationalistic pride - yet even that is a strange thing to think; Scotland has much more in common with England than it does with any other country. If our Scottish brothers wish to move away I think we should let them; yet I believe we are stronger when we are together.

EDIIT Well then if you believe you can do it then do it. I believe that people should vote on such things - if the majority want it then the majority should get it. What I'm saying is you shouldn't rush into such things without thinking them through properly. You mention Ireland as an example - yes they got their independence, but it was at a terrible cost. The Irish economy was pretty dire until relatively recently (they were one of the poorest countries in Europe), and look at all the trouble it caused in Ulster. Perhaps if they'd used their heads instead of their hearts to make the choice it would have made them fare better?

You have the SNP in power in Scotland after many years, and were they not campaigning on the principle that they would make Scotland a seperate country? They've been in power for a while now and it's still not happened; not even been seriously talked about - I don't think Westminster is the only parliament filled with liars and hypocrites.

Calum, I too am a proud Scot, but I'm not going to get involved in the prejudiced rhetoric that seems all to common on both sides of the argument.

I just want to say that if you think independence from the UK would also get us out of the EU, then you are very much mistaken. Scotland's devolved SNP government are actually more pro-Europe than the UK government. What the SNP want is not for Scotland to be a fully independent nation, but to eventually become a full member state of a federal EU on equal terms with England.

That is the choice offered by the SNP. Either remain part of the United Kingdom, or leave the UK to become a full member of the EU. Ask yourself, which would benefit Scotland more in economic terms? I think you only need to look at how well the Republic of Ireland has done in the EU for the answer to that.

Yet, the fact remains that the majority of Scots continue to vote for unionist parties, and in the SNP's best ever election result in May they only just scraped home as a minority government with one more seat than Labour. To my mind, that seems to indicate that most Scots prefer to remain in the UK. So you see, it isn't the English who are preventing us from leaving the union. It is the unionist majority here in Scotland.

It is kind of sickening to see people saying that Scotland wouldn't be a viable state and would have 0 influence in world affairs.

Well at the moment Scotland has less than zero influence in world affairs, its views are not taken into account in the European Union or United Nations because it is not an independent nation, Andorra has more influence in the UN.

As for viability, the Republic of Ireland has a population of four million, Scotland has 5 million, same population as Finland. Can anyone deny the economic might of those Ireland and Finland, the pharmaceutical and telecommunication giants of Europe(respectively). Both these countries are constantly at the top of poles in reference to prosperity and quality of life. And both countries turned around economically within a decade. So Scotland may not have the most astonishing economy on the planet, but at least when they are independent, they can decide what policies will suit them best.

Our last two Prime Ministers, Blair and Brown are both Scots and many in the Government also have their origins in Scotland. It is surely they who are trying to block what you wish to achieve on your own, but, Why?
Perhaps if you had them your side of the border, being so 'canny' you would soon sort them all out, or, put them out of Office.
England is not just for the English anymore, it is for all!
Sincerely, Good Luck to all Scots, it is a beautiful country: I have worked and lived there for times in my life and have no complaints with any of the people - they are generally kind and the salt of the earth. At times I do envy you all - but like you, I love our Gt Britain,- but in particular my own country England and its origins.

Actually I'm Welsh not English but it seems to be that the majority of English people would be happy for Scotland to leave the Union. I think its an unfair exaggeration to say that they are "trying to hold onto you". The replies to this thread pretty much sum that up!

The bigger question is whether the majority of Scots WANT to leave in the first place.

I'm not English, but looks like the Scotch took over the English long ago. House of Stuart came down and never went back. And, isn't Mr. Brown Scotch?

Maybe it's all the oil up in Scotland.

Like most English people I don't care if you leave the union and again like most want you to take all your backsides over the border and we will even help you build Hadrian's wall a thousand foot high just as long as we don't have to hear you whinging on and on about how much you hate us and what happened hundreds of years ago with William Sweaty Sock Wallace.

And as for your false pride, you know it is the Pitts in Scotland because if you had any real pride you would get on with being a partner with England and stop blaming them for everything that is wrong in your depressing little country.

Common sense would say that splitting the union is going backwards to the past for both countries, and for some Scots that is where they think they want to be, this romantic notion you have could turn out to be the worst thing that ever happened for your country, who will you blame then???

hms jollies, Why the hell should I give you my e-mail and listen to you dribbling on about my attitude about the Scots, I actually like and love ( some ) Scottish people but the one thing that really pisses me off is your lack of humility and your ridiculous anger at anything against Scotland.

The English know their faults and are always prepared to laugh about them and don't go red faced and start ranting on about how prooood they are under the veil of the massive inferiority complex you seem to suffer!!!!

Calum, If Scotland were to go it alone i don't think they would prosper,
you can slag the English government, but not, the English people, who have stood beside you in times of need and fought for right and freedom for hundreds of years,
Yes we do nick your oil revenue but who discovered it?.
Do you not think that Scotland and its people gain anything from us English, I'm sure you would rather be on our side than not.
what ever happens in the future like it or not you are part of Britain, your energies would be put to better use getting us out of Europe,
and Europe out of us.
rule Britannia, and Scotland the brave what God has join together let no political bunch of toss-pots put asunder.
