Everyone (not everyone, but mainly those of older audiences) who grew up wit hip hop in the 80's always try to label ALL kids within a certain age groups..lets say 13-17,18, with not knowing about hip hop, the origins, the legendary artists that paved the way for the artists we have today..just because the likes of Soulja Boy, Hurricane Chris, *insert ringtone rapper here*, etc. are popular, they judge all of us with not knowing anything outside of that...yet look at the BET Hip Hop awards, all grown ppl, people who grew up wit the 80's Hip Hop dancing to Soulja Boy, they liked the song, it was entertainment..I dont see anyone trying to strip them of their "Hip Hop Merit of Honor", yet if its a teen doing it, all of a sudden "o they dont know anything about hip hop"..what gives them any more liability? most of these same people probably have never done an in-depth search of artists today to see if they could connect with any..just dismiss it all based on what you saw on TV...

im sayin tho...there are adults out there who actually enjoy this radio-friendly music, i dont see anyone playin the "they dont know hip hop" card there...just cuz someone listens to a lot of commercial rap/hip hop, doesnt mean they cant separate whats "real" or fake, its just their preference

No, for the exact same reason "adult R&B" is dying. Older people just don't buy Cds and don't get behind an artist like younger people do. Another problem is, most older cats ironically, listen to the youth targeted Hip Hop so marketing would be a problem. Also, why take a chance on a project like this when the music industry is already worrying. Putting money behind a project like this would be the nail in the coffin IMO. So we will get more of the same until things shape up.

Yea I think : ) asked a question not exactly like this but along the lines of it...I said it not a problem with listening to mainstream music and liking it...We all have fallen victim to liking one of these stupid as s one hit wonder song due to radio playing it over and over. I dont like this new era but I dont support it by not buying it or not listening...I dont knock ppl for liking it cuz I look at it as a club song or kids song(for real just a terrible song)...jus the same as the Lip Gloss joint...its was made by a kid for kids...lol But when they start calling these characters the best and greatest because they are played or POPular...That when I say they dont kno anything about rap...Its no different from when Hammer came out...U couldnt tell a Hammer fan he wasnt the best rapper ever...lol

I judge the new generations by how they comment on certain topics concerning hip hop...That how I can tell if they kno or have any worth of knowing about hip hop...Ur young and have a pretty good perception of what hip hop is...and how we critique the music. But a lot of kids dont have a clue. We had our share of dance songs in the 80's like the whop, smurf, roof top, rambo...lol ish like that...But now that we are parents...We look at these dances the same way our parents look at the dance that came out during our youth. Ur right its not fair because like anything else a youth can educate themselves about the ish...and run from there.

To be honest most of our generation doesn't, only some. If alot of our generation did then there would be some different people playing on the radio and we would see different music videos on B.E.T or the music would be more diversed then it is today and not all about the same topics. I agree though on the part on people labeling us about not knowing anything about hip hop cause obviously some of us do (some). The people who grew up on in the 80's who we're at the hip hop awards dancing to soulja boy do you think alot of them care about hip hop dying, rap being commericalized and ect? As long as they're sitting in their million dollar home they're all good. Money sure does change some people.......

@evil good looking homie!!! but now i feel old.....
@HNIC It isnt to be mean but it usually is true cuz like the guy who seems irritated at Nelly says, on the 106 and Park they play old school stuff saying Big Pimpin is old school joint of the day...WTF...
i am 23 and went through the music in stages....
5 - 9 listening to Fresh Prince, Tag Team, Kid Play, Kriss Kross, etc from older brother
10 - 13 Radio that played everything de la, eazy, big l, every thing
14 - 17 found the underground scene thnx to tech n9ne....let underground mean whatever u want....went into chi, kc, fl, everywhere in between...oh yeah cuz from Arkansas put me onto Screw and I found down south...
18 - 23 went deep into old school, new school, west coast east, underground, old miami bass just becoming an overall hip-hop head....a real b-boy

so to top it off...why do they say that....because not everyone is takin my journey into the music....most stop at the radio and tv....which is a crime....or should be...

Straight up...I agree with geek or die...Im 28...I heard the same ish about rap coming up too...
But I do work with kids...and most of the time they hype whats on the radio cause its the easiest access to music that they have...Its not really their fault...its only what they know...But like geek or die said...it does kinda trouble me when they call these bubble gum rappers like Soulja Boy "hip hop"...but who am I to call anything...so I dont complain...I just SMH...But I do give props to some of the young bucks on here who have broadened their horizons and took on more music then what is on the radio...

i've never heard of them reffered to as ringtone rappers but it is such a fitting term. i'm gonna start using it. I may not be a fan of old school but i have heard it. I know and respect the music by tupac or jay-z or biggie or rakim. A lot of people hate on me because i don't like tupac or jay-z but it's just my opinion. I respect them. I know how important they are, their music just isn't my style. no need to get all annoyed at me.

I am 13 and know what your talking about. Its cool though, because I'll admitt that the only people that listen to Lil Wayne, Soulja Boy, and guys like that are mostly 12-18.

I don't discredit those that like these artist...My beef is when they call these artist real hip hop. Or compare them to real hip hop. I Like Some Pop Music. So it'd be hypocritical of me to down others for diggin it. BTW I'm 25 and they did the same to us when we were 17 or so.
