Everyone's first answers are going to be 'for the oil'. But the oil wasn't all of it.
Being a 'war president' gave Bush the justification for spending a lot of money, just shoveling taxpayer money to his buddies in well-connected corporations and campaign financers. It allowed him to suspend the Constitution and act like a tin-pot dictator--establishing secret prisons, 'disappearing' people off the street, authorizing torture and 'rendition', denying constitutional rights to defendants, even suspending habeas corpus. It allows him to intimidate Congress, and for him and the Republicans to label anyone who disagrees with him as a traitor.
And even the most staunch Bush-supporter has to admit that without the war he wouldn't have had a chance at a second term!
And -then- there's the oil. 8^)

Quite a few reasons.
1. Iraq switched from the USD to the Euro for oil trade which hurts the value of the dollar (other countries doing that is one of the reasons the dollar is worth less now)
2. Sadaam tried to kill his daddy.
3. Sadaam killed the Kurdish people with illegal weapons.
4. Sadaam only backed down from Clinton because Clinton strategically used news outlets to scare the Middle East.
5. UN weapons inspectors gave Iraq tons of time to move things around and hide things.
6. Every major intelligence agency in the US and abroad thought that Sadaam had WMDs.
7. Sadaam claimed to have WMDs.
8. Whatever happened to the Anthrax that Iraq was given?
Whatever happened to the nerve gasses Iraq was given?

We went into Iraq for the following reasons:
1. Saddam had violated numerous UN resolutions about violating the no-fly zone and having missiles that the UN said he wasn't supposed to have.
2. To free the people of Iraq from a tyrant who was dropping nerve gas on them.
3. Because we had reports, that we though were credible at the time, from agents in Germany that said he had WMDs.
4. To create stable democracies on both sides of Iran (the other being Afghanistan) so we wouldn't have to invade them.
5. To keep the world oil market relatively stable.

Two reasons actually neither having to do with WMD although that was the reason given.
The first is obviously oil.
The second has to do with revenge for a comment Saddam Hussein made which amounted to a threat to kill Geroge Herber Walker Bush. "He's the man that nearly killed my dad".

The premise of your question is false. The consensus (libs favorite word) in the US and around the world at the time of the invasion was that Iraq had WMD's. Just prior to his execution Saddam even admitted he was trying to convince the world that his WMD capabilities were more advanced than they were which is why he continued to expel UN weapons inspectors.

Everyone can claim Oil but theirs more to it than that. I belive that it is because daddy couldn't win this fight, he lost the re-election and couldn't finish the job. Junior had to get in and do it, see Jeb could've ran or any one of the other kids but his son that carries his name had to finish it out. To put a 'stamp' on it per-say. Second, yes, oil, in order to secure funding for the future for any member of the elite orginizations that are disclosed to the public a neverending cash supply had to be discovered and concealed. Most people wont understand that part, but thats okay, its not meant to be understood. Third it is to show power. We're dominant (stupid sometimes) but we dominate the global economy. We're a go between for countries that don't get along. For example (this might not be exactly how it goes but its close) If Iran wants cheese from the US, but we put sanctions on them, they will go to france who don't have sanctions, and buy our cheese we sell them. Well we do that for other countries, not knowingly but.. we do, as do other countries. We just like to show our power that if you mess with us, we'll level your country and reduce it to the stone age, and take over. Look at any war you can think of in the past or present. Same things always apply: Lands (resources) Power (we wiped out your country...) Money (all the sales from new resources) See we have no need to attack countries for anything we can produce at home. We don't have enough oil here, we needed it. People were blowing up stuff in America, we wanted to show we can blow things up too. And the money from the oil is neverending.

There was a plot to assassinate Bush sr that was foiled. It was thought to be by Saddam. He is doing this for revenge. He originally just wanted Saddam but then he became trapped in Iraq.
