If you had any comprehension why we are paying so much for oil, you would realize how misplaced your question is.
Who decides how much we pay for oil?
The commodities brokers across the world.
What do they have to do with oil? Nothing, most are men that are trying to broker their retirement accounts so they can sip Pina Coladas on the beaches by the time they are 29. None have ever visited an oilrig or know zero about how they operate.
Politicians
Politicians make their living by keeping less than half the people in their district from being mad at them. They do this spouting off junk they do not believe or even care about unless there is money attached to it.
Jimmy Carter started the Department of Energy in response to the "oil shortage" in the 1970's. Reagan, Bush, Clinton, and Bush II have done nothing to create a viable energy policy.
The Saudis?
Is it their fault everybody else in the world is willing to give them hard earned money to pump stuff out of the ground that only cost about $10 a barrel to get out the ground? Should they turn down the money? Would you?
The Public?
Aren't we the ones that did not force the politicians into drilling offshore, building more refineries, easing environmental regulations, providing tax credits?
Or is it all of the above.
--
Nobody was complaining when 100,000's were laid off in the oil bust from 1983-1991. Why should they complain now?

I truly wish that America would began to grasp the concept of supply and demand. We have enough oil beneath the surface of this country to abate, for a great number of years, the shortage we now have in oil supply through imports. But, guess what - The Sierra Club and other environmental groups tie up, in court, each attempt to abate that shortage by further developing the resources we have. So what do we do? We blame "big oil" for a problem they did not create. Sure, "big oil" makes billions of dollars because they sell even more billions of gallons of a product. Any company selling the same volume would do even better. I will have a nice Christmas and I certainly don't begrudge "big oil" having a nice one too.

Usually people with money don't feel the pinch in their pocket like us normal people who live paycheck to paycheck oh not because of credit cards but basic living, rent, utilities(no cable by the way), car note and STUDENT LOANS. Sorry went off on a tanget but everyone is to blame even the big oil companies. Ask any civil minded engineer and I am sure they will tell you that there have been inventions to end the big oil crisis but people are way to greedy to let those inventions be known to the public or be used. Big Oil I think encompasses more than just the Oil company it encompasses everyone who supports the misuse of the money.

oil company's profits are much lower this year than last year.
I am sure they are hiding the profits somewhere though... Maybe in their stocking.
