It is very unfortunate that we live in a world that correct spelling and grammar has been thrown out the door. Most people under the age of thirty don't know how to spell correctly and/or do not take the time to spell check. HELLO - there is a "Check Spelling" option right at the top of this dialog box. Laziness!!
When my youngest son, now 24, was in elementary school, I was appalled that his school teacher did not correct his misspelled words. Her comment was, "We want the children to "love" to write, we don't care if they misspell, we want them to enjoy writing." My son still makes many spelling and grammar mistakes (there, their) and I blame it on the lousy educators. I made every effort I could as a parent to correct his school papers but the teachers/educators didn't help with their "attitude".
"Texting" on cellphones is also contributing to shortcutting and the obvious acceptance of misspelled words; how unfortunate.
Great "question" you posted - great observation!

Hello, I actually think I am a good speller, I just sometimes are so fast or don't care because, I know that Punctuation, and spelling is important. I want to tell you that Punctuation, is an important thing when asking questions and giving answers, so that the person that asked, or the answerer, can understand what you are saying. That is the reason for The "Check Spelling" sign when you are giving an answer. Oh, and just to let you know, right now I am not using Check Spelling, so let me know if I'm spelling anything wrong.
Okay??
Ha-ha, did you notice I spelled ever thing right?

This is an example of the computer age destroying standards.
Who cares if you aren't getting graded?
You should! You may not be getting graded but unless you are texting you will be viewed as IGNORANT. Especially since the site has a spell checker on every page!!
Take pride in yourself and show people that you really care what you are doing.

Unfortunately, that's all too common here. People should take a little self-pride to show their literacy.
There are two possible scenarios I can think of -
1) They're illiterate
2) They pretend to be illiterate (because of peer pressure?)
Would you believe, that just yesterday, I received a Violation Notice because another person didn't like my answers concerning their question?
I answered that they could use a desk-top Dictionary, or perhaps use the furnished Check-Spelling button, to assist with improving their spelling.
Why would I receive a Violation Notice because of those two informative answers?

Observation valid.
I can't decide it is because they don't know how to click on the spell check; or they think that garbled writing can be understood.
Many time, I will write that a better phrased question is in order because I can't understand what they are asking.

I think it's more a case of lousy typing. Hardly anyone thinks it's necessary to reread and edit an email. And I'm sure texting, etc, has taken a toll on the written word.
And for Charlie: Cite is for citation. You cite a source. Site is a place, like a web site. Look it up: http://dictionary.reference.com/

I must concur, it seems that the electronic age has foregone the need to spell things correctly. I believe it's because of the texting that is associated with cell phones. It's amazing that so few can see the little check spelling block.

I am one of those can not spell well but i don't blame myself for it. Because, I know i worked hard to do what i can and you may not see where the difficulty lay. In my view, the reason is not do we are not able to memorising spelling words but behind the words lay the pictures which our Brain seem it and when we try jet them down , the graph of picture play out as miss spelling rather than hold to enforced law of abstraction of words had been enforced self.

Spelling correctly would be simpler if the check spelling dictionary weren't defective. Try the rather simple word "gauge" and see what it says.
Most people don't care. They think they know what they asked, so they think we should know how to answer it.
