It's the lifestyle. People who go broke spoiling their kids have only themselves to blame.

Whatever happened to one main gift at Christmas? Or making a cake at home and having your birthday party in the backyard? It's possible to celebrate major events for next to nothing, but few people do.

Regarding everyday needs, families today eat out way too often and worry too much about buying brand name clothing.

Child care is really expensive. It's what to do about caring for your children, do you pay someone else or do you quit and do it yourself. Lucky people have grandparents. Some people get by with subsidy from the government. Just depends. But in my opinion, that is the biggest expense.

The rest is all down to lifestyle, you can live cheaply if you are so inclined. But, some things cost and you can't skimp on.

The lifestyle contributes, however they are expensive. Health insurance even if provided by work can be huge....we pay $571 per month for it through my husbands job at a hospital, groceries, gas, sports, ipods, ps2, (they do not need these things I know, however ALL of their friends have things and they should be able to fit in), clothes, music lessons, dentist, and just the expense of weekends, you have to do things - there are friends involved. I chose to have my children one at a time,...I have one 29 and one 9....however my marriage ended in divorce and I married a man with three children....I have 5 now......it is huge and as the other lady said....Christmas is coming....the spirit of Christmas is remembered in our home, however gifts are also given. They are worth every penny.....wait until college.

I have three great kids, and I am a stay at home mother. My husband brings home approximatly 60k a year. All three children are in public schools. While we enrolled them in low to no cost after school activities, you'd be amazed at how quickly costs rack up. Everything from doctor bills, groceries-even down to the water bill will increase once you have children. However, if you're finances are secure and you're marriage and lifestyles are in the right place, then go for it. Children make your marriage difficult sometimes, but always worth it!

I saw on TV a woman in the philippines that had 10 children. It cost about 5 dollars per day to feed all of them. (rice noodles and egg)

If you feed them mcdonalds then its expensive. If you use disposable diapers instead of cloth diapers, its expensive. If you shop at baby gap instead of the thrift store, its expensive. If you insist on having a 5 bdrm house so each kid can have his own bedroom instead of a 2bdrm house and making all the kids sleep in the same room, its expensive. If you buy gerber baby food instead of buying fresh fruits and mashing it up yourself, its expensive. A jar of banana baby food cost about 1 dollar more or less for a little 4 ounce jar. A pound of bananas costs about 65 cents and you can mash it up and make 4 times as much and save money.

So i would have to say the lifestyle

Very expensive at any time of the year with any lifestyle, and for life too, can't trade them in or put them back, you will never have a minute's peace for the rest of their growing up and onwards. Worth it tho' but so difficult - if girls knew how hard it was they wouldn't be having them so young.

i believe children are expensive i should know we have six of our own.....i think when you have to put together everything a child needs it could get a little expensive..but if you put aside all the things a child wants it kind of gets a little crazy...my kids dont want for anything but believe me they are not getting stuff every week...at first it was like that and from time to time it gets a little crazy but we stuck to holidays and bdays...even then we have a limit...so i guess you can say kids are expensive but the life style you live can make it worse

It is common knowledge that raising a child can be upwards of 1/2 million dollars from birth to the age of 18yrs old.

Lifestyle can be expensive as well it all depends on what you need to have in your life and what you can do without.

The average family spends aproximately 200,000$ on each child by the time the reach 18. Not including tax dollars that go towards tuition or money that parents spend on Christmas and/or birthday gifts. You decide if that is expensive or not.
