a 2-3 zone in basketball is a defensive formation where the 2 guards play a zone defense at the top of the key, while center plays zone under the basket and the forwards play defense on the blocks.

The two-three zone is a basic defensive alignment in basketball. It is a scheme that is intended to counter playing man-to-man schemes and challenge the outside shooting of the offense. The center protects under the basket, while the two forwards defend base line activity and the guards challenge the front court. The zone rotates over to which ever side of the court the ball swings to.

The offense will attempt to beat this defense with three ideas:

1) the "pick and roll" at the top of the zone, where one offensive player blocks a defender to allow the ball handler to either drive or shoot
2) the "skip pass" which is thrown from one side of the court to the other to make the defense adjust. A player receiving the skip pass should be open if the pass is accurate.
3) the "penetration drive" which has the ball handler driving in to draw extra defenders or confuse their zones. The ball handler may then pass to an open teammate or shoot.

A 2-3 zone has two people in a line usually guards and three people behind them it looks like this

G G

F C F
hoop

Players are responsible to defend the area they are assigned rather than a specific man. There are other types of zone defenses such as 1-3-1 1-2-1, diamond and one. Next time your coach uses a term like this that you don't understand its alright to ask. He is there to educate you on how to play and shouldn't assume everybody knows what he's talking about

the proper term is 2-3 zone. it means that you have your two guards near the top of the key, and your two forwards and center in a line in front of the basket. there is also a 2-1-2 zone where the center plays further forward of the plane to forwards are playing on. each of these zone defenses force the other team to shoot from the perimeter more often. the perimeter being the imaginary line around the outside of the zone of defenders.

Husband is a coach- this is what he said- probably means zone 2 would mean 2:1:2 zone- means 2 people at the free throw line, and 1 person of the lane and then 2 people back under the basket.
A 3 would be one person in front of the free throw line, 3 in the middle and1 back under the basket. Hope that helped.

zone means you play defense in area (or zone) of the court and guard the nearest offensive player
2-3 zone
2 players play defense at the area at the each corner of the free throw line. left and right.
3 players play "near" the basket
one left of the key, one directly under the basket, and one right of the key.
Try to stay near the key and quickly double team dribblers into the key and get rebounds too. This defense will allow outside shooting, but usually you won't get beat by that.
If you start falling behind go with man to man defense: guading the same player all the time.
or 3-2 zone.

A 2-3 zone refers to a type of zone defense. In this particular one you have our two guards at the top of the key with your to forwards on the block. The center remains under the hoop. Also, you obviously have to shift but thats something your coach should tell you about.

A 2-3 zone is one where there are 2 guys guarding the perimeter and two guys guarding the paint, and the third (its not the same person) is guarding the ball-handler....even in a zone scheme you never leave the person with the ball open.

Thats essentially what it all means, you have a zone or area to protect instead of a person. There are numerous variations.

It's typically a defensive formation. Two of the guys play near the top where the three point line is (one on the left side and one on the right) and then three guys line up across the bottom. They each guard their specified areas rather than guarding an actual man. Hopefully that helps..
