3x/2 + 21 = x/5 + 2

Multiply the whole thing by 10 to get rid of the fraction

15x + 210 = 2x + 2

Subtract 2x from both sides and subtract 210 from both sides

13x = - 208

Divide by 13 to get x alone

x = -16

Multiply out the brackets on the LHS to get:

3x/2 + 21 = x/5 + 2

Multiply both sides by 10 to get:

15x + 210 = 2x + 20

Subtract 2x from both sides to get:

13x + 210 = 20

Subtract 210 from both sides to get:

13x = 20 - 210

13x = -190

Divide both sides by 13 to get:

x = -190/13 or x = -14 8/13

Remove brackets by multiplying:
3x/2+21=x/5+2
Collect like terms on opposite sides:
3x/2-x/5=2-21
x(3/2-1/5)=-19
x((15-2)/10)=-19
19x= -13/10
x= -13/190

2007-11-14 18:24:05 · answer #7 · answered by Robert S 7 · 0 1

distribute the 3 first
3x/2+21=x/5+2

subtract 2 fromboth sides
3x/2+19=x/5

multiply both sides by 5 and distribute
5(3x/2+19)=x ---> 15x/2+95=x

subtract 15x/2 from both sides
95=x-15x/2

combine x
95=-6.5x

divide -6.5 from both sides
x=-14.615

Ms Exxclusive gave what should have been the best answer except for error in second line of working :-

It should have been 15x +210 = 2x + 20

(3/2)x + 21 = x/5 + 2
x(3/2 - (1/5)) = 2 -21
x= -19/(10/13)= -24.7
