it seems so dumb to me, as they are a *LOT* less expensive, AND if there's no complications, a lot more safer for both mom & baby.
so why would insurance companies not cover them??
seems like it would be in the best interest of all involved.

Desiree--if there are no complications, it's not medically necessary to give birth in a *hospital*-- but you may be onto something with the contracts...

It is because a midwife is not a medical doctor and doctors run the insurance companies. Not YOUR doctor, but A doctor. Some policies will cover them, but for the most part, you have to just eat the cost at an out-of-hospital facility. As time goes on, they will cover it, just like they did chiropractors. My Blue Cross/Blue Shield policy even covers homebirth.

I would say it's because a birthing center is not a medical building hence the word medical. Medical insurance normally doesn't cover anything unless it's medically necessary. It's not medically necessary to give birth at a birthing center that's why they have hospitals and with these hospitals they have contracts. As for the midwife I don't know what there problem is with that I see a midwife at almost every appointment.

Doctors have mortgage payments to make and cars to pay for and kids to put through college and student loans to repay. Do you really think they want to wake up to find everyone is healthy? The Insurance companies are in bed with the entire medical society. If people were not more and more dependent on hospitals and doctors, less and less people will feel they need health insurance. The doctors also keep the pharmecs is business writing scripts for drugs. That's why. Recommended reading: "The Amercian Way of Birth" by Jessica Mitford. It probable honestly relies upon on your plan. I honestly have Highmark Blue flow & they quite cover midwives. honestly on the city that I stay in there are only 2 workplace's that deal w/ being pregnant & at those workplaces the dr's there only preserve specific circumstances, i.e. fertility, being pregnant issues, etc. each and every thing is dealt with with the aid of the midwives. I paintings for an insurance corporation & can tell you in the event that they are actually not providing you with a rapidly answer, that is b/c they don't understand what a midwife is. or you will possibly have your answer with the aid of now. i did no longer precisely understand what a midwife exchange into till I have been given pregnant even nevertheless I knew various of persons who used one, so i'm no longer able to blame them for no longer understanding. even nevertheless, that is their activity to be sure. i don't understand each and every thing at my activity yet whilst i don't understand the respond, i'm going to stumble on it out. no longer make some thing up! deliver an digital mail or write a letter to the insurance corporation so which you have some thing in writing whilst they provide you your answer. If that would not paintings, call & ask for a supervisor.

Because it's "risky"...they don't want to end up paying for the midwife/birthing center and any complications due to the birth that may have to be taken care of at a hospital...which is retarded. Time to get another insurance company!

with my 1st child who was born, 9 yrs ago my insurance covered my midwife....I did not do a home birth, it was a actual hospital setting and I would not recommend midwives. i had the worst experince. I was in pain for 27 hours then delieved a 9 pound , 4 and a half ounce girl..I tore so bad down there and as she was coming out, they heard a popping sound..they thought my newborn had broke her arm...after x-rays on her and me..they found out it was me..i broke my tailbone...I have a bad back now because of it, i am on the heating pad every night. With my 2nd child, he is now 21 months old , i went through a real doctor and i had epidural(best thing) and my son was born 5 hours later at 7 pounds, 2 ounces..I hate midwives. I sued her and won but i would rather have a pain-free back than the money i recieved at 35 yrs old. go to a real doctor!!!!!!

That totally sucks. I'm sorry...i've been dealing with my insurance company lately and their crap.

It might, and this is just a guess, have something to do with if you have a midwife...they might think that if something goes wrong...the midwife will not be qualified enough to intervene....as if you had a home birth or something....so it's higher risk to them.

If a birthing center is not in a hopital...then i would think they would be thinking the same thing.

That's just a guess.

Dude, i would just flat out ask them. Give em hell.

It's not just your insurance company that isn't covering this, it's the homeopathic centers and practitioners that won't deal with them because insurance companies pay less money than individuals.

you should never have to pay insurance for going into hospital or birthing centre and giving birth that kind of thing should be govement funded instead of giving the money to some boffins who send $20 bilions chunks of metal into space
