Nothing short of getting plastic ornaments. Cats can climb inside the tree too. One year I got some very light nylon netting and kind of wrapped the bottom of the tree in the netting. I got green netting to match the tree. I took the netting off when we had guests. That usually kept the cat from knocking off the ornaments off the tree. I am sure your cat was delighted to see the tree thinking it was a giant toy just for him.

My cat is about 10 years old, and still enjoys batting the ornaments around....so, first of all, we get a smaller tree, that will set up on a low table, or box...actually this works realy well for leaning presents against...anyway, then I hang plastic ornaments and wooden ornaments on the lower branches....my ornaments are from the 50's and 60's and I have a large collection of Antique Ornaments as well, which of course I do not want the cat batting...then I put a few of the plastics on up the tree, so everything blends well....the cat bats around a few every year, but it is always the plastic ones that end up on the floor...works well for me! There are some really pretty Plastic ornaments now, and a box or 2 shouldn't set you back too much...otherwise look in the local Thrift shops for some...Hope this helps! Merry Christmas!

I have 2 cats and they are a handful at christmas.
They climb the christmas tree and hide in the branches to nap. I just gave up on breakable balls after losing so much money every time one of them hit the wood floor and popped.
Now most ornaments are nonbreakable but the ones that arent are helped out by sewing quilted batting under a large tree skirt. This helped alot. If they fall now its not a guaranteed busted ornament ball. It has half a chance anyway.
I got crafty too and made alot of unbreakable ornaments. Im not sure your a crafty person but have included instructions for 2 that I made and I think they are very cute as well. Oh, and good luck with your kitties... :-)

1. Keep the ornaments off the ground where he can reach it.
2. Remember that he is a cat and can jump up 4 feet into your tree.
3. Remember that he will be bored with it after a few days.
4. Squirt him with water whenever he comes near the tree. (I am not a big fan of this as he is a cat and is doing what cats are supposed to do - but if you are really desperate, it might work).

If you're a cat lover, you give up the breakable ornaments and decorate with unbreakable items. I made this decision when my cat broke my 50year old baby ornament my mother had saved for me. My cat usually climbs up the pole of my artificial tree. Get creative, use silk flowers, silk ornaments, 3" ribbons woven through your tree, plastic snowflakes. There's hundred of items. I can't guarantee your cat won't undecorate your tree, but you won't be sweeping up glass. After all, our pets are part of the family and that's their way of having fun!!

place the breakable ornaments more toward the top, don't use any this year that have a heartfelt meaning, and place plastics more toward the bottom, then when the cat goes to play with them tell them no, move they away or get a spray bottle and spray water at them when they go near, they will learn. Good Luck

this is an idea for after christmas when everything goes on clearence at the stores. buy a tree just for the cat...you don't need a huge 6 foot one either. Next christmas put the tree up for the cat and decorate it with catnip toys and fun things he likes. I know this sounds weird but I did this for my cats and now they don't pay any mind to my main tree.
good luck

We use an old candy cane that's been broken in half but it's not on display. The decorations have been put away until next Holiday.
