Eddie Van Halen was a great guitarist but if you are comparing innovation or simply the quality of their body of work, Led Zeppelin is a full class above them. I think Eddie would agree. I am sure David Lee Roth would agree.

I prefer Van Halen music to Zeppelin but have to go with Zeppelin. Only because when you take the difference in the time period Zeppelin was one of the original heavy metal groups that influenced Van Halen among others. And Led Zeppelin overcame many doubts from others. Remember how they took there name, "The Who" another British rock legand said they would go over like "a led balloon" hence the name Led Zeppelin. Again Im a Halen fan but my vote goes to the old school originals.

Look at it this way, you might be comparing a group that blazed the trail and another that followed the trail already made. Granted both groups ARE good. I just think that Van Halen had the groundwork done for them by not only Led Zep, but many other groups as well. If not for Eddie's playing skills, would the discussion be relevant? It seems that every member of Zeppelin really had a significant impact on the band and it's sound, as well as expanding the genre of Rock.

I personally think that Led Zeppelin's music is FAR better than Van Halen.

Led Zeppelin. Anyone who says otherwise does not really listen to the music. They just listen to the beat. Led Zeppelin is more bluesy. They also rocked, and could do one hell of a ballad. Van Halen was good pre-Sammy Hagar, but they sucked after him. Only thing good about them was Eddie himself. Zeppelin had it all, awesome vocals, incredible guitar, legendary drummer, and lyrics that were true poetry. You can't get much better than that!

Led Zeppelin
Zeppelin was perfect. Probably better than the Beatles. Van Halen started out really good, but soon fell apart and continued to get worse until they became a joke.

"Hear me, Grasshopper - the answer to this question can only be found in the stripping away of it's vanity as who is best - but who has conferred in the character of both, to be beholden - and chosen - as well!"
So... Keye Luke I'm not. Try the Flamin' Groovies. They're "Running with the Metal" - of a sort. Dick Dale, too - God love ya son! I thought I'd heard the last word in guitar with Django Rhinehardt - you've sure got the licks, kid.
But I don't want to be just another jerk with some smart-alecky "the other guy - duh!" answer. By sheer breadth of recorded output - I would have to say Led Zeppelin. But let it not be forgotten - Van Halen re-defined rock, guitar and all - for better or worse - for at least a decade, as surely as The Beatles, Presley, and Sinatra before them - Think Eddie Van Halen - then think Chuck Berry. True trailblazers - whereas Led Zeppelin "trampled" on the blues masters' standards with skilled precision-playing and abrupt time-signature changes that were like bolts of lightning at a crossroads - did they re-invent the blues? Well, no - but if Robert Johnson could have made heard his last plea in this life , it would have sounded something like "I'm Gonna Crawl."
"Uh...... keep me!"
