You have to apply for section 8 at your city or county's housing authority office. Problem with section 8 is that you can't just walk in and apply. You have to apply when your local office is accepting applications. For instance, here in West Palm Beach, applications have not been accepted for over 4 years!

Anyway, if you are lucky enough to get it, it will allow you to rent a home and pay based on your income. Section 8 will pay for the rest. Also, some cities are allowing section 8 recipients to use their voucher for paying off a mortgage so that low income persons can become homeowners.

Whatever the case, section 8 is usually something you have to wait for. Its not for emergencies.

Visit www.hud.gov for more info about section 8.

It is not the home, but the renter who needs to qualify for Section 8 housing, due to financial need. Once you have qualified, then you look for a place to rent, and most landlords love section 8 renters because they always get their money.

The best source of information will be the Department of Social Services in your state. I would google Section 8 and your state.

Don't waste money buying any information, they (the Social Services, office) will provide you with any information free.

If you live in a small town a visit to your local city hall will give you great leads.
