We have a big pond in our pasture. While the pasture is fenced in, kids have a way of wandering around. We want to get our child to the point where she can swim if she wanders into the pond by accident. Do you think giving them kicking lessons and the like, before they can really swim, will make the pond more tempting, however?

You can teach them at any age. I am a swim instructor myself and I would say that getting them in the pool at an early age is a very good step for them to be comfortable in the water and yet still respect teh power water has. it depends on how little your children are too. If they are under 3 there are simple things that you can teach the kids while in the water. Try going to a pool and practice kicking while they are on the side of the pool. This will build up their leg strength. Also have them work on paddleing their arms as well. You can also try and have them do front floats and back floats.

The main thing with children is safety. I am a swim instructor and you ALWAYS have to be watching the children unless they are good swimmers. It is a lot more dangerous while they are in water than playing on land. You have more to worry about because they can be traumatized from bad experences or even suffer from drowning. Teach your children to always be safe in water. Swim with a buddy or even better an adult.

If you are worried about the pond have your children wear safety stuff such as lifejackets, noodles, or even arm floaties. Teaching your children is NEVER a bad idea!

Teaching them how ti bob might be a good idea as well. Also check if there are swimming lessons in your area. Swimming lessons have a very practical uses, once they can swim well you can take them out in the ocean, or go scuba diving with them (once they pass the test of course). Hope this helps!

We had the same issue with our three kids. The first hated his early swimming lessons and so kept away from the pond. The second was neutral to his swimming lessons so there was no difference. The third however loved his swimming lessons and from that moment on would try to jump in every pool and pond he saw. Kind of unnerving for us parents as he was only 2,5 years old and totally fearless with regard to water.
