multiply two fractions? You multiply the denominator and numerator.
ex.
1/2 * 5/6 = 5/12
if its by a whole number, then just think of it as the whole number over 1
ex.
1/2 * 2 is the same as 1/2 * 2/1 which equals 1

multiply the numerators. multipy the denominators.
so
5/8 times 3/7 is 15/56
If there are factors in common, you can reduce the answer to lowest terms, or you can "cancel" beforehand. (either way, you are getting rid of the same factors)
so if you have 14/21 times 3/7, this is ( 14 x 3) / (21 x 7)
Divide the numerator and denominator by 3, and you have
14/ ( 7 x 7).
Now divide numerator and denominator by 7 and you have
2/7

I don't usually criticize others, but I have to correct some errors others have made. I am a college math professor, and too many students come to college not knowing how to do grade school arithmetic. So for the sake of everyone who reads this, I feel compelled to point out.....
when you multiply a number by a fraction (less than one), the result is smaller than the number you started with.
cluckincom's method does not work, because multiplying 3/16 by a fraction less than one would have to produce an answer less than 3/16. But 9/8 is greater than 3/16.
likewise, GerryLynn's method does not work, because 1/3 times 2/5 would have to be less than 2/5, and 5/6 is greater than 2/5.

Multiply the top numbers by each other, and then multiply the bottom numbers by each other. Put the new top number over the new bottom number and then you reduce. Example:
1/3 * 1/4 = 1/12
3/8 * 2/5= 6/40 which reduces to 3/20

sort oftof what is a 1/2 multiplied by two thirds?
just write it cleanley eg
1 2
- x -
2 3
the multiply the top row and the bottom row indepednendtly and write it in the same way
= 2
_
6
then look for the lowest common denominator, 2 here so the iread finally 1 over 3 = 1/3rd

You have to do what they call cross multilying. You multiply the numerator times the denominator. Example:
1/3 * 2/5 =5/6
