Experts say that a girl should go to a doctor if she doesn't get it by the time she is 16. So you friend still has a year. (and tell her not to worry, some girls don't get it until they are 18)

If your friend hasn't got it by the time she is 17 she should make a trip to the doctor. She may just be a late bloomer. Many girls don't get there periods until they are 15, 16 or 17

I didn't start mine until I was almost 15, some people just get them late.
Another reason may be that you often don't start you period until you weight at least 110 pounds, because your body is preparing you to have a baby so you would have to have enough weight to support it if there really was a baby.

I have heard of people not having them until they are 17. But...if she is really worried she should talk to a health professional.

some people are just late bloomers, there is nothing to worry about. Let nature take its course. Some of the people I know didn't start until 23, and they are perfectly fine.
