it is not so 'sexy' as the Palaeolithic and the Neolithic - the Palaeolithic has beautiful carvings, artifacts, paintings etc and the Neolithic has all the excitement of the new - farming, settling, the beginning of civilisations - the middle was a struggle to adapt to the changing climate - little time for the niceties of life - they were too busy trying to find food - any food! In the Palaeolithic there was good hunting and convenient cold storage, freeing people to find time for other things, in the Neolithic there was the product of farming, also giving more time for other things - the Mesolithic - if it had a heartbeat you ate it - if it didn't, you still ate it! It was a hand to mouth existence leaving us very little at which to look and study - let alone wonder over. Perhaps an under-estimated period...

The Stone Age of prehistoric man is primarily divided into old (Paleolithic) and new (Neolithic) periods, defined by significant differences in tool making and obtaining food. The Mesolithic period was a later refinement, representing a lesser change in tool making between the Paleolithic and the Neolithic periods.
