The compromise of 1850 stated California would be admitted as a free state. To calm slave-state politicians, who would have objected to the imbalance created by adding another free state, the Fugitive Slave Act was passed.
The fugitive slave act required citizens to aid in the capture of runaway slaves.

The election of 1860 is when Lincoln was elected. Lincoln won the election with out winning a single one of the southern states. The southern states realized then that they had no "power" left in the government so they seceded from the union.

The kansas-nebraska acts said that the people occupying those territories could choose for themselves whether or not they wanted slavery. Pro-slavery people from the south and abolitionists from the north all rushed tho kansas where a small war took place resulting in what is now called "Bleeding kansas
