hi... i was given an after school detention for 2 hours last week for not doing homework. The DT was from 3.30 til 5.30 in the maths classroom. The teacher made me write lines out for the whole 2 hours which was so not nice..... and my hand hurt!

Today at school, I was given another after school DT for not wearing my uniform!!! Its on friday, and i know i will have to do lines again,.... oh joy!

Is it fair to be issued 2 after school detentions with writing lines??

And what are your detentions like?

Consider yourself lucky.
"Detention" back in my school meant: brooms, mops, trash bags, toilet brushes, trashcans, and a lot of scrubbing!

Writing lines as a punishment is an old tradition. It's fairly ignorant of teachers to require it for two hours. Certainly they should know that there is real risk of injury to your hand or wrist. If you do feel pain, make sure to report that to the teacher, and if necessary, ask to see the school nurse.

To make the task a little easier and less painful, use a thick pen with a good grip. Also, if you have to write the same phrase over and over, it's easiest to do a whole row of word one, then a whole row of word two, etc.

Regarding the question about my detentions -- well, I was in school a long time ago. Our detention was 45 minutes long. During that time, you had to sit still, face forward, and do absolutely nothing. Some kids hated that. For me, it was sort of a "rest break.".

Wow this is harsh. At my college afterschool detentions have been 50 minutes and we've been meant to do writing exercises (like summarising a piece of writing or writing an essay on a topic remember and so on) yet many of the academics did not innovations if we did homework. i think of this is stupid to difficulty lines, i recommend the college could enforce the regulations yet writing lines is a stupid punishment. Why not do something efficient, like your homework or something, or maybe cleansing up the grounds. And 2 hours is plenty too long for a detention.

Detentions are determined by the teacher. I have students do homework, copy lines, help out with classroom cleanliness, whatever. Bit of advice- if you can't write for two hours, don't go to college. All classes are straight note taking, and most tests are all essay based.

that sux! i think u should at LEAST do something else, but i suppose the whole thing is meant so that u dont do it again, but still... well anyway, did u run out of clean uniforms to wear, or did u just not wear it? cuz then if u ran out u shouldnt be in trouble. but anyway, i think we have it worse. at my skool, we get saturday detention, and we go to school, sit in a classroom, and do absolutely nothing. for 5 hours. ur not allowed to read, write, or anything. u just sit there. but our school doesnt give out detentions as much.

Well the teacher has the right to have their own methods of punishment when it comes to detention. Yes i think this is fair writing lines because way back when they hit you with a stick as punishment.

It is the descision of the school; if you don't like it take it up with the counseler.
Our detention is copying out of our school's handbook for 45 minutes so we have it better.
