I don't mean drama as in "school drama", I mean plays and acting. Why is it impotant, and why do we have it?

It is a reminder of what we may aspire to, what we may fall prey to, and that in the end all will be well. See Sydney Michaels' Introduction to Dylan which says that the theatre is where we really live as opposed to the humdrum of reality..
It is in these ennobling sentiments that drama has true meaning, rather than in the claptrap "entertainment" and propaganda that we are often fed from producers who would use drama for their own personal gains.

Its a way of expression, much like music and visual art. It allows us to face fears/hopes/dreams in a typically non-threatning way. It presents up with ideas, people can take from it what they need, typically everyone will learn something. Maybe a certian place, time, way of being. It was also originally created, we believe, to worship dieties (as was believed by the Greeks), it became ritual (which we can still see in our every day life).
Seeing/Being in a play can also take us away from the worries of everyday life, trasnport us to a different place, allow us to explore hopes and dreams.

It's very much like religion - you get it if you need it and vice versa. There's comfort for many of us in seeing our challenges and triumphs held up like monuments. We're less alone somehow with the knowledge that others, too, have felt this lost or this filled with unutterable yet uttered joy. Stock characters remind us of their doubles we meet everyday in life. Some rare, wise people may even manage to avoid tragedy if they see themselves and their fate foreshadowed in time on that other safer stage.

dramas broach subject matter that can be difficult to deal with like fears and dreams and stuff like that, but they can also act as a social and/or political commentary, which forces the audience to address feelings of intolerance and apathy and other things that people turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to.
