it was called Armistice Day, celebrating the end of World War I, then known only as The Great War. It was supposed to represent the 11th day of the 11th month at the eleventh hour and eleventh minute past that hour.

When the armistice began, when hostilities stopped, by agreement between Germany and the Allied forces that pretty much ended World War 1. (They had to wait a bit longer for the formal peace treaties to be signed).
