and if its a degree in nothing, wouldn't that be a waste of money?

It's not a degree in "nothing," more it's a degree in everything. The liberal arts used to be what was taught in college (hundreds of years ago) before we started specializing. Liberal arts usually focuses on humanities, social studies and science. There might be 3-4 courses each in psychology, history, English and literature, management/entrepreneurialism, and art.

These days liberal arts is generally for those going on to graduate school. There is also an associates degree in liberal arts, which is usually for those tranferring to a four-year college.
