My almost 7 month old grandson is taking a baby/mom swim class right now. The instructor told my daughter that babies do not hold their breath under water as once was believed. The class is designed for babies to get used to water and for moms and babies to enjoy an activity together. The babies in the class are never held under water, but part of their play is having water poured on their heads with little plastic watering cans. My grandson loves the water and is having a great time playing with his mom in the class.

yes, that's true, my baby girl started at 7 months old "water babies" classes and she loves it. It's Saturdays and is 1 hour and last class she made her first under water immersion. She loved it and was able to hold her breath.

I used to watch a lady teach a baby boy to "swim" at the pool in my apartment complex.

Basically, the parent blows in the baby's face just before the baby is put in the water. Baby's reflex is to suck in breath and hold it. I've got to admit that it kind of freaked me out to watch, but the baby seemed to love it. He laughed and splashed when his mom or dad would pick him back out of the water. He only cried when he got really tired and cold.

It's an instinct to hold your breath when you first go underwater, so yes, they are correct...but this does not mean the baby can be HELD underwater. A few seconds...yes. Check out the album cover for Nirvana's Nevermind album.

Wow, no need to shout! Yeah, babies love the water, and can swim around quite happily underwater for up to a minute. But really, you shouldn't push your luck. 30-seconds tops, IMHO.

I think that if you put a baby under water they will drown. They dont know how to swim, float or hold there breath. DO NOT EVER LEAVE A BABY IN ANY AMOUNT OF WATER ALONE. Where does your teacher teach school anyways. How would they know how to hold their breath. Think about it.

Yes, they do when they're first born. They don't take a breath until they'er out of the water.

Actually, yes they do. That's one of the reasons why 'water babies' classes are popular.
