1. Because they're hoping someone will come along and try to make them smile, just to see what it looks like on them.
2. They really don't trust people who smile a lot, and don't want to mislead anyone into thinking that they're happy.

They might be depressed, or they have a whole lot of things on their mind . Or maybe they're sick or possibly they think their teeth aren't white enough. Ah, the media, it has a way of making most folks feel insecure.
Ans it's that time of the year, Holidays can do that to some folks. It does me.

face is like a machine, it might need some oil to get it started... but on the more serious side, the person might not like the situation they're in, they could be sad, mad or feeling simply blue... they might as well be facing some trouble.. i wish everyone can smile...i'm smiling to you now :)

well, for many reason. some might just be caused by a particular situation or event (boss yelling at you, being teased, death of a family, etc.). or by more long term things like depression (as the first answerer stated). it makes the simplest task difficult such as enjoying a particular moment (ie being around family and friends, holding a conversation, etc.)

Because, like me, they aren't happy. And life is very difficult and stressful. I suffer from epilepsy and clinical depression, when I'm not being screamed at by my 84 yr old *mother* who says, "I wish I never had you". No. nothing to smile about here.

Well where should I start....One reason could be because there just not very happy with themselfs....another could be that there just naturally bitchy people...They could be trying to forget bad things that happend in there life and just thinking about it makes them sad....could also be that there not too happy about goin to work because its really not all too great....They could have lost more than one family member or friend within the year and there just devastated about it

A very sad, difficult life would make me not want to smile. Also, bad teeth.

For fear of rejection. If the other person does not smile back, they will feel stupid and as though they somehow have the upper hand. It’s far too big a risk for them.
