"Science" practices data observation, theory-building and testing. It uses this procedure, called the "scientific method," with atoms and other such material objects. Since ~ 1900, physics, the most exact or precise science of matter, has found that matter is primarily fields and fluxes. E.g., the atom is mostly "empty space," that space is filled with virtual photons, too quick for this universe, but which support the electronic orbitals. The kernel of the atom is mostly gluonic force fields, with about 3% quarks, which together make up the larger protons and neutrons. These particles have properties not found in the Newtonian world, e.g. bilocation, non-locality, entanglement, and the like.
"Religion" is a "tying back" of soulfield/biofield psi intentionality toward perceived Virtues of Goodness, divine Love, God-Harmony, Peace, Justice, Mercy, Purity, Mind, Truth, Soul-individuation and -realization, and the like.
A major trend since 1900 has been the reunification or blending of science and religion, or knowing and spirituality. A key example is Dr. William A. Tiller, http://www.tiller.org in physical science. His books, including "Psychoenergetic Science," demonstrate soulfield intentionality able to significantly influence Matter at the quantum level, in ways otherwise obtainable only with major physics equipment.
Other books which evince this aspect of research and belief include "Entangled Minds," Dr. Dean Radin, "Extraordinary Knowing," Dr. Elizabeth Mayer, "Climb the Highest Mountain," Mark Prophet, and "The Self-Aware Universe," Dr. Amit Goswami. Ann Ree Colton's "Kundalini West," Ken Wilber's "Quantum Questions" and O. M. Aivanhov's "Hope for the World: Spiritual Galvanoplasty" are more philosophic looks at the emerging similarities.
Http://www.divinecosmos.com Dr. Henry P. Stapp's "Mindful Universe," "The Master of Lucid Dreams," Dr. Olga Kharitidi, and Lynne McTaggart's "The Field," may also be helpful.

Epistemology
Science accepts only empirical and deductive evidence as knowledge. Religion does not require evidence, but faith.
Method
Science follows the scientific method and objective verification. Religion utilizes subjective experience.
Truth Claims
In science, for a theory to be valid, it must be able to be falsified (tested). In religion, any statement can be true if it comes from the proper authority.
These are just a few of the differences. There are plenty more.

Religion is not a blind following. It is a sub-consciously driven
group ritual. It calms the 'collective unconscious' mind. The
religious culture brings unity and belongedness among the followers.

Religion picks-up where science leaves off.
Man is in constant struggle with and in fear of the unknown.
Religion, especially considering its scope and pervasiveness in the world, is a testament to the creativity and innovation of a man confronted with the unknown.

Religion is based on faith and the belief of things unseen, whereas science is based on some sort of proof or tangible evidence.

Different sides of the same coin. Science is based off of rationality where as religion is based off of faith. None is better than the other.
