I need some really really good advice. Someone I know is days away from the time limit to make a genuine compensation claim for personal injury. Can it be done and if so what is the quickest way of getting the claim in (to be heard later of course)

Thanks in advance

The state of residence would be the determining factor, but in general, it may take ten to fourteen days to get that processed.
That is, working days.
But file and ask for an extension. You may receive some leniency

If they are still days away, then yes they can still do it.

The best bet, to avoid problems with the mail, etc, would be to have all the filings, and the service on the defendant, handled in person.

How you have to effect service on the defendant depends on the law of your State, but 'every' State allows personal service. You can usually have the local sheriff do it, or in most places any adult who's not connected with the case can serve him. Then take the proof of service to the court in person as well, and you should be able to get in under the deadline.

It doesn't matter how long it takes the clerks to process and register the case, so long as the filing, the service, and taking the proof of service to the court, is all done before the deadline.

Hiring a lawyer for minor legal problems can be expensive, but there are websites like LawGuru, FindLaw and other places where you can get free legal advice. I found this website useful - http://www.uelp.org/freelegal.html
