Well if the tiles cracked because they were laid on a plywood subfloor, putting carpet down is really easy... just get rid of the layer of tiles, get some quality underlay material to hide any humps or pits left in the plywood from the tile removal, line the edges of the room with carpet tacker boards and lay your carpet using one of those knee activated installers you can rent from home depot or lowes.

Hi Amy, No offense first of all to answer one; but it hardly matters what the tile was installed over; it should still be removed. BTW after multiple thousands of sq. ft. of tile installations; many on Ply; I've never had a complaint call back.

Certainly answer one offers valid suggestions as to what to do; IE: tack strip etc.

Floor scrapers are readily available at big box home imp. stores; and it can be labor intensive; but you'd be doing the labor anyway; even to replace broken tile.
