I actually understand what you mean. When I was on my team in the 7th grade it seemed like everyone on my team already had a idea of what to do. I was mostly playing in the parks or at rec centers. So when it came to organized basketball it was frustrating that i was better talent wise, but lacked the basic fundamentals. So i had to sit and watch... thats what my coach made me do... sit and watch. I started writing down the names of the plays and making diagrams for the plays. My coach didn't want you on the team if you couldn't get the basics down, but I really wanted to be on the team. So i studied, practiced hard, and asked questions even though i was scared i was going to be made fun of (and was). But once my teammates saw how bad i wanted to be on the team they helped me out. So did the coach. So I made the team and eventually became the starting shooting guard. So now you have to ask yourself, how bad do you want it?

"This is what I will do in the year, 2008. I probably won't be in
Fayetteville, Arkansas at the University of Arkansas, or in
Louisville, Kentucky at Louisville University, or not even last
or least, at the University of Maryland for my first official team
practice."

"I will have those expensive hand-held erasable marker use
white boards with the outline of a basketball floor on them for
my personal use. If I don't have those, a simple sheet of
blank paper (no lines) and a retractable pencil will do."

"Your teammates can laugh all they want. More than likely,
your coach hasn't decided on who is going to start or not. A
law of basketball is, whoever UNDERSTANDS the offense
comes 'PRESSURE-COOKER TIME', will be the one on the
floor, regardless who starts."

"I've paid lots of attention to the early 1980's Boston Celtics -
Los Angeles Lakers Championship Finals Series. Although,
Byron Scott would start for the Lakers, Michael Cooper was
on the floor the final two minutes of every game. Likewise,
Kevin McHale for the Celtics would be on the floor. He would
sometimes replace their shooting guard. Yup, McHale had
to guard 'Magic' Johnson on occasion in the fourth quarter."

"My lady, come time for the N.C.A.A. Mens Basketball Final
Four, I will have a notebook full of lamenated sheets with the
three-ring binder holes of every offensive play my coach has
'masterminded'. All I have to be is enrolled in a university."

"Without asking for, or accepting an athletic scholarship, I do
not expect to start."

"During time-outs, (talking about the closing two minutes of
regulation or overtime), everything that coach is scribbling
with the [X's] and [O's], is what that team better have been
working on all season long."

"Then, there won't be ENOUGH TIME TO ASK ONE SINGLE
QUESTION."

"You're back on the floor in less than thirty seconds, whether
you understand what is going on, or not."

"Young lady, when someone tells you that basketball is ninety-
percent mental, and ten percent physical, believe it. They
don't have a classroom, while the spectators are enjoying a
half time show, for nothing."

don't be afraid to ask your coach, the people that make fun of you can go screw themselves, every person on a team is important, including you. obviously you made the team so you're doing something right. if you're really not comfortable asking in front of other people try pulling him aside at the end of practice or right before or something and talk to him when everyone else isn't watching you. you're going to be fine, good luck.
