Working and making a living in the 1940's China envolved intense physical labor. Very little machinery existed and all work was done by hand. China at the time was an agrarian society relying on farming to survive. Men were needed to produce food and crops from the feild. Women were needed to produce workers, keep the home and raise boys. Keep in mind that China had been invaided and occupied by Japan in the 1930's and in doing so many Chinese men were killed in the fight. Boys were needed to rebuilt society and to potentialy drive the Japanese out pf China. Imagine a world without cars, trucks, tractors or any sort of machinery. It was all physical long hours worked.

Boys were able to carry on the family name. They actually hated girls, they only used them to make money when they sold them. Boys also worked more and since they are stronger they were used more.
