Will the leafs trade Sundin? I can't picture them doing it. Sundin loves it there and they love Sundin. They'd be crazy to trade him. Any truths to these rumors?

It won't happen.

1) Part of the agreement for his restructuring in the summer is regardless of how bad the Leafs are, they won't trade him.

2) The structure of the contract is such that other teams would find it very unfavourable (Sundin is no longer 100% physically and the chances that a receiving team could re-sign him is very slim).

Unlike Ryan Smyth who had no intention of retiring after last year, Sundin has hinted that this could be his last year, so that places a burden on a team trading for him. He is making $6MM a year, nobody is going to give away $6MM worth of players to have a guy who MAY retire after he leads you to the cup (the new CBA practically forces trades to be equitable from a financial standpoint).

But..............you never know..........JFJ may take a bag of pucks for him in February and dance up and down Yonge Street thinking he got a good deal!

I doubt it. Look at his numbers and tell me who they could replace him with in the next 3 years?
The Leafs are experiencing some growing pains and the puck hasn't bounced there way but to trade Sundin would be ridiculous IMO.
Rumors are abound anytime things head south. And with the Leafs the last couple of years it's been all downhill, sadly.
Now they are discovering the talent they've harbored and cultivated that will help move them back to the top of the NHL within a few seasons.
Like the Sharks and the Ducks have shown, allowing time to build your talent and then choosing the right time to display it bodes well for your long term future.
Look at teams like the NYR and the Detroit Red Wings, they've done well in the market as long as the cash is there but if you don't produce a cup contender look how quickly and far you soon can fall.
Defense and top youth talent is what the NHL is all about now. You still need your stars and your high scorers but the foundation for the long term is clearly about defense and youth.

Well, he is on a one-year contract and if he displays no urge to stay with the team, they just might trade him for draft picks at the deadline, so as you can see, that's still far away. But then again, I'm basing this off of what a competent GM and management would do. So if that were the scenario, no, they'll just let Sundin's contract expire and get nothing for him in return.

I think it's about the same chances of the Lightning trading one of the big three. It most likely won't happen, but there's always that possibility.

You know that Adidas slogan? "Impossible is nothing", well that's how it is with the Maple Leafs, but not in a good way.

I guess we'll have to wait and see. They should be respectable and let him go to a contender.
