My son's friend told me the kids picked on her because she talks white. Her mom is a high school English teacher and so she has been schooled on grammar all her life. Why should having good grammar just be a white thing? I know white people that don't speak so well. This 10 year old has me beat when it comes to English. So why do some people put this label on black people that have good language skills?

Because some people are just that ignorant. I've spent my entire life being told that I don't sound "black" or "black enough" or that I "talk white". My grandmother is an English professor. I had proper grammar beaten into me from the time I was old enough to talk. Here in the DC area most of the black people I know speak with proper, unaccented English. On the other hand, lots of the white people around here speak fluent redneck (MD and VA are still part of the south).

That's weird. You know some people speak well and write well and others don't . I personally don't think it's a racial thing. I do remember the movie with Eddie Murphy when he was teasing the black police officer in Beverly Hills about the way he was talking - banana in the tailpipe. And there's that stupid radio commercial where the guy says "He's very well spoken for a black man".

I personally think that we as a country have to get over this. Watch Jerry Springer sometime and you'll see a whole bunch of white people who can't speak well, for sure. Sounds like some more prejudiced idiots to me. I certainly don't feel that way. I personally know some black people who speak very well and some whites who can't form sentences.

I for one am not someone who thinks that way. I think of good grammar as a good upbringing and a good education system. It's not black or white it's just good education. Which I hate to say sometimes the good teachers aren't in the schools where they are most needed. I've seen and talked to plenty of white people who can't form a coherient sentence (my spelling sucks by the way) and I've met a lot of blacks who are very articulate.

Speaking proper English & doing well in school doesn't get young black people respect in the inner city. I think it's because using proper grammar & getting a quality education isn't encouraged by rap, the urban culture, or Ebonics.

I am not sure. And I was also teased in school by people said I talk "soooo proper" (with sarcasm...) and people now still call me a white girl. I think that some get intimidated because they think you are trying to prove yourself as being 'better' than them...
Its not just w/grammar is whats worse,
Its has to do with the way you dress (just because I like vintage and dont wear skintight clothes or like the lastest trends), your hobbies (I rather not be a cheerleader or on a step team; I want to do fine arts) and the music you choose to listen too (I dont just like rap and r&b; I like techno, dance/club, rock, indie, etc. as well).
I feel like society is a cult sometimes... : (-Than agian there's talking black...
Who knew that grammar had a color! LMAO!

This reminds me of my best friend who I've known for 10 years. She's black and I'm white. She speaks with proper grammar and so all of her black friends call her an oreo cookie. they say she's white on the inside

EDIT
I'm amused how black kitty makes it a point to say the black people in her area are educated and proper and the white people are redneck. you're not making us look bad. you're making yourself look like a racist though!

It's not a "white" issue. It's about education and speaking properly. It has nothing to do with the color of one's skin. Good luck. 2D

it truly is through fact blacks in united statesa. weren't allowed to have the comparable privileges in existence as whites. the only existence that blacks have been waiting to stay replaced right into a life-time of suffering to get by using and proceed to exist. Blacks have been segregated and lived interior the ghettos and hence trusted crime as a skill of survival like maximum folk with out thank you to pass up do. by using the time blacks have been ultimately given greater rights and freedoms there replaced right into a mentality that human beings had - blacks, whites, and so on that whites have been greater knowledgeable, nicely-spoken, and efficient (hence of having greater rights and training obtainable to them) whilst blacks spoke improperly, have been criminals, and unsuccessful (as is wide-unfold of the oppressed). It replaced into only those days that minorities, and blacks specifically, have been given their complete rights as human beings and so this mentality nonetheless exists as we communicate. do no longer pay attention to all and sundry who tells you that being articulate, clever, civilized, and efficient skill you're actually not black. you have been black through fact the day you have been born and could continually proceed to be so. proceed doing the failings you're doing and be at liberty to spectacular people who assume that your race ought to ascertain your information. attempt to no longer combat with them yet frivolously spectacular them and tell them. i've got been on your challenge many cases previously and that i also have a problematic time attempting to no longer get into arguments with those human beings. lol
