I have always used checks unlimited, check gallery or one of the others b/c of that reason. They are SO much cheaper. Where they get you is that if you reorder checks from them when you get low, they jack the prices on you. You would be better to order as many checks as you think you will need in X number of years, then when it's time to reorder use a different company. Just keep track of which ones you use because if you have the same account number, and think you haven't used them before and have, they'll debit your account.
Besides, you get more variety not going with the bank. You can google cheap checks and you'll get pages and pages of options, some for 99c per box

This Site Might Help You.
RE:
Is it best to order checks directly from your bank or do other check services work just as well?
Like checks unlimited. The checks from the bank are so much higher then retail check chains. What are the risks and benefits of each?

Well hello there Kei..
If you've got the discipline, a debit card is much cheaper and more efficient than a checking account. They're readily accepted, easier to carry, no self-balancing and free.
If you do find that you want a checking account though, take a look at those small envelopes of coupons that you get in the mail, or the ones in the Sunday paper. Those companies generally have the lowest costs. I hear the checks with a Steelers logo are the nicest too. : )

Banks will not warranty a 2nd party's checks against problems, but that is probably moot.
My bank gives me checks for free, and paid me to open the account. They also track which checks come in so I can see a break in sequence.
The risks of an alternate company are probably small. But if you or they make a typo in the account number, you are screwed.

You maybe better off with a debit card. That way you use alot less checks when you do need them saving you some money. You may also check your account online and a debit will usually show that day.

If it were me, I would. I'd do like the poster above suggested--direct deposit in both your credit union and Wells Fargo. Put slightly more in the Wells Fargo account than you need for your mortgage payment, or whatever they may require for a minimum deposit each month. Also inquire to see if they offer and automatic payment option to the mortgage. That will save you a lot of stamps, checks, and frustration.

I always order from one of the other sites rather than go through my bank. They're usually cheaper & they have better selections. I like Current & checksinthemail.com
