NO DONT! APPLE CAN STILL HELP YOU FIX YOUR PROBLEM!!

if we can't help you, call or go to your local Apple store.
sorry no one hasn't answered your question. this is the first time I've seen it.

let me try and help:
as you know, when you connect your ipod to your computer, the ipod thinks your syncing it. so to prevent from anything bad happening, it says on the screen "do no disconnect." for me: itunes opens up and starts syncing, then eventually says "ipod complete. ok to disconnect."
if your ipod says "do not disconnect" and the computer does nothing or doesn't even detect the ipod go here: apple.com/support
there are tons of articles in this subject.
here's one:
iPod missing in "My Computer" or in iTunes for Windows - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61711
you can also search support for macs. idk what you have, so I assumed you had windows.

hope I helped. again sorry no one has answered you and if you can't get answers here, then MOST DEFINATELY you can get them at your local apple store.

you need to email itunes tech support and find out.
you may have to reset it entirely, just dump the whole thing and start new.
sorry, i wish i had better news....
