Make sure you're uninstalling it from the Add/Remove programs (or Vista's Programs) icon in control panel.

check here for uninstall tips for norton:

Now that you have gotten rid of Norton, following the suggestions of the answers (above and below this one)...

...getting rid of Norton also means you will be needing another anti-virus program to replace it.

Might I suggest a few free versions to check out, (which work very well, I may add) and use until you get something else...

Never go online without some type of protection installed.

Free Anti-Virus programs-
AVG Free
http://www.free.grisoft.com

AVAST! FREE
http://www.avast.com

Free Anti-Spyware programs-
Download, install, UPDATE and scan with the programs listed below.
These are free programs with free removals and free definition updates. So use them often.
Always click the button to UPDATE before starting the scan.
Remove (Quarantine) all items they find.

1. SuperAntispyware here:
http://www.superantispyware.com

These two are free, make a great pair and work well together, when used one after the other...

2. Ad-Aware 2007 here:
http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

3. SpyBot Search & Destory here:
http://www.safer-networking.org

Hope this helps.

Use protection,
your computer will thank you.

It means just what it says. Unless dissabled go CTRL ALT DEL, this bring up the task manager scroll around looking for a norton program running and shut it down. Exit the task manager and kill the program from the hard drive.
Before that try an uninstall the correct way, well you may have done that anyhow and what is hanging around is a part of the virus scanner. Please insure you have a valid backup each step of the way.

Go to the symantec website and get the latest norton removal tool. In some rare occasions this doesn't work then you will need to down load a version of NoNav. This will remove it. But first I would get the one by the vender. Just google them they aren't hard to find.
