I need to protect my bulbs from those little eating monsters. I was thinking chicken wire. Any other suggestions or suggestions for securing the wire?

The daffodils are poisonous and they wont eat them. If you plant the tulips as deep as you are supposed to, 5" from the top of the bulb, they will not dig them up that deep. They will dig up crocus, cyclamen, and other small bulbs, right after you plan them, as soon as you turn your back. Some of them they will eat, and I am convinced that they just want to see what you planted sometimes, as they will just dig them up and leave them on top of the ground. Try blood meal as they do not like the smell of blood and will probably leave them alone.

You can plant them in the ground in a cage built of hardware cloth. Keep the whole bulb(s) surrounded as they will dig underground yo get to the bulbs.
Hardware cloth has much smaller holes in it than chicken wire, but chicken wire would probably work just fine.
First dig the hole for planting
Put the netting down and add some soil
Place the bulb on the soil and pull the netting up and close it at the top
Cover it all with dirt

Ground squirrels can burrow underground so you need to establish is those critters are your problem. They will require underground mesh as well.

A combination fence of wire mesh with an exterior electrified wire may work.

You could put up a wire mesh fence 4 ft tall. Then add a 2 ft wide skirt of smooth sheet metal to keep the squirrels from climbing.

Squirrels like to have covered areas to retreat to. If you get rid of trash piles, brush, and wood piles you can maybe move the Squirrels out of striking distance of your bulbs.

Sticks of dynamite. Seriously.

First, they will invade your garden shed and gnaw holes through the most valuable item there and then strew gnawed up pinecones all over the place.

Then they will chew through your fan vent in your roof and scamper around gnawing framing and wiring in your attic. They are after your very existence. stop them.

Put some squirrel food out somewhere away from your bulbs....maybe this will keep them busy.

USE CRITTER RIDDER. THIS WILL GET RID OF THE SQUIRRELS. SPRINKLE THIS WHERE YOU DON'T WANT THE SQUIRRELS.
