So anyway, I was wondering if you can get pregnant off the Depo shot? Isn't it like 99% effective? I got my first Depo shot at in the middle of September, my past period being August 21st. The doctor didn't want to wait until my next cycle for my period so she gave it to me on Sept. 19th. My guy and I had sex on Sep. 28, 29 and 30 under the asumption that I was protected. I didn't have my period until the 2nd week of October and it was dark, thick blood lasted 2 days I think. Nothing for two weeks and then I had watery, thin blood everyday for about three weeks. Now I haven't bleed in over a week but for three to four weeks now I have been nauseous, throwing up in the middle of the night, tension headaches, no appetite, constipated and smells are making my stomach turn. Oh, the other day I was so exhausted at work I came for two hours to nap! Possibility I am pregnant? This is my first round of Depo and I have heard of people getting pregnant! I have a doc appt in an hour! Help!!!

NOTHING is 100% effective, so yes you CAN get pregnant off the depo shot.

I know women who have.

The shot is pretty effective immediatly. Bleeding is a side affect and usually doesn't come back after the first shot. it may. As far as being pregnant. take a test...but i would doubt that you are prego. i was on the shot for 8 years. i think i waited maybe 3 days before i had unprotected sex when i got mine. This is from the Depo site:

The first shot of Depo Provera is usually given during or a few days after the start of a menstrual period. After 24 hours, the shot is effective birth control for the next 13 weeks. Many women find it useful to schedule their next shot slightly earlier than necessary; if something prevents them from making their appointment, there will be a window of opportunity to receive their next shot.

Side Effects back to top

70% of women using Depo Provera gain weight. Almost half of the women using Depo Provera gain more than 5 pounds after one year of use. Many women gain more than 10 pounds.

Irregular, heavy, or no bleeding are common side effects of Depo Provera. After a year of use, many women stop having periods. Lack of a period becomes increasingly common with longer use.

Other side effects of Depo Provera can include headaches, nervousness, mood changes, bloating, hot flashes, decreased interest in sex, breast tenderness, acne, hair loss, and back ache.

After the last shot of Depo Provera, it can take over 6 months for the drug to leave the body. Side effects may linger until the drug is completely gone.

I would take a test but i would not think that you would be preggers...hope this helps and good luck!

What part of 99% effective don't you understand? It doesn't say 100% which means there is always a 1% chance it will not work. Whether you like it or not the only thing to definitely keep from getting pregnant is to not have sex.

No, it is VERY effective but your periods are irregular if you even still have them, I was on depo and I had NO periods, I got off it because it gave me morning sickness and made me gain weight.
