You need to work for an interior designer or a firm. You would start at the bottom and essentially learn the business. You be in charge of ordering fabrics, creating presentations, answering the phone--any number of things. Don't expect to start by "designing" and don't ask!

If you are wanting to get into interior decorating, work for an interior decorator or volunteer if you have to.

If you are wanting to go into the architectural aspect of interior design, work for a builder or an architect.

Interior design could lead to a career in interior decorating, home design, home building, furniture manufacture, fabric design, light fixture design, etc.
