Some countries have experimented with putting RFIDs inside their currency. The concept may well be in the testing phase for US. But as of now, the technology is not being used in circulating US currency.

The most recent newly unveiled bill was the $5. Unveiled September 20, 2007. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing website makes no mention of any RFID being included in this or any other bill.

The idea is that the microscopic RFID is virtually undetectable without the proper equipment. And if that ID is missing, but currency would be worthless.

However, the US Bureau of Engraving and Printing states on their website, "Every U.S. banknote issued since 1861 is still redeemable today at full face value and will continue to be legal currency. In addition, there will be no recall or devaluation of any U.S. bills as the United States has never devalued its currency and will not do so now."
So the use of an RFID in the US is unlikely.

Send me your $20 and I will let you know.

There are many new anticounterfeiting devices. Check out the US mint website and the Secret Service website for information.

Microchips can be made so small these days that you cannot see them without a microscope.
