defensive forward............or defensive defenceman?
Nicklas Lidstrom is a balanced defenceman, he is not a defensive specialist
Henrik Zetterberg is an offensive forward with decent defensive skills (He doesn't impress most fans as much as he impresses Detroit fans - go figure).
Defensive Specialist - Defenceman: Anton Volchenkov. Considered by most the best defensive defenceman in the NHL
Defensive Specialist - Forward: I know that the NHL gave Rod Brind'Amour the Selke trophy, but I've always had an issue with giving point a game guys with good defensive skills this trophy. There are far better defensive forwards out there - and my current favourite defensive forward is Kirk Maltby..................and I think it's a shame he has not won a Selke yet!
Yes people, the greatest defensive forwards tend to be '-' players because they tend to play against the greatest offensive forwards....and trust me, A Gretzky and a Lemieux will get their points against a Maltby or a Draper.........but against a Mats Sundin or a Joe Sakic..............they'd get a lot more!

Taking nothing away from Brind'amor or Pandolfo, the best defensive "specialist" in the NHL is Sammy Pahlsson in Anaheim.
The only thing that keeps him from winning the Selke is a lack of scoring...
Lidtrom is the best defensemen in the league, but I'm not certain he's the best defensive player. Niedermayer is the best skating defenseman and might have the best poke-check ever... Pronger has that physical side and an incredible reach... and Lidstrom is deep in every aspect of his game...

This one is easy for me. IMO the best ever was Brian Leetch. He unselfishly set up plays and helped his teammates all the time through out his whole career. Another would be Igor Larionov , even with his age he is still one of the best two way defenseman I've ever had the pleasure to watch.
Currently I'd have to say Niklas Lidstrom by far. He's a little weak on defense for my taste but he balances it out easily with his offensive prowess. He goes in and attacks the puck and the goaltender regardless of there image.
If you were talking solely defense? That would be a list a mile long of unsung heroes in the NHL covering several decades.

With out a doubt the best Defenseman in the NHL is Nicklas Lidstrom. He has won 5 James Norris Trophies. And plays 30 minutes a game for a reason.

Here we go. No one ever thinks of Dan Boyle. Given that he has been out most of the season due to a stupid skate dropping incident. As far as last year goes, I would vote Dan Boyle for best-all-around Defensive President. Why do people never think of him????????
