You are only required to have a passport if you try to return to the US from another country.
If you are not planning to travel out of the country you are not required to have a passport.

No. There is however rules in place for entering the US. Currently you must have a passport to enter the US via air or sea. Starting 1/1/2008 you will need a passport to enter via land crossings as well. If you have no plans to leave the country you do not need a passport.
They are NOT required for travel within the US regardless of mode (air, train, bus, car etc.)

No. However, there is a law that recently went into effect that you now must have a passport to travel to/from any foreign country. This was not previously true for countries such as Mexico, Canada and certain Carribean islands.

No, there is no national ID requirement of any kind. But if you plan to travel by plane, or leave the country, you'll need one. I'm not sure if they'll be required for trains.
davidmi77: I may have heard wrong, and I certainly should have checked before I wrote, but someone who flies a lot more than I do told me that they will soon be required for domestic air travel as well. Hope that's not true.
