The outfit you mentioned sounds too casual.
Try wearing a pair of khakis/slacks, a nice button down shirt and a pair of flats.

Wearing the "Stars and Stipes" used to be illegal. Now it's.just really bad style. Sorry.
If you must wear a "designer hoodie" try Hurley, CK...A&F..etc.
Assuming you may need to remove the hoodie at some point, get a cool athletic fit tee to wear under it... Old Navy has cheap, well made, mildly funky tee's, and they usually fit really well. No "Scarface" tee's please :) . Oversized baggy shirts are for short, fat guys with everything to hide and nothing to show... bag them too if you don't fit that catagory.
Wear the best shoes you've got. Leather. Stressed... not shiny. Wear the coolest watch you can find or afford. If you can't afford a watch, wear a brown leather wrist band. You can get a nice one at A&F for about $20. Wear a simple leather cord or dark metal necklace with an understated ornament on it. Very cool. Very simple.
I haven't seen a decent pair of corduroys... EVER. Wear stressed jeans... boot-cut, and don't even think about the boxers hanging out look. If your looking for a job it's a kill shot. If your walking around in public it still looks f******g idiotic.
BTW I work at a college in SoCal

You're always better off dressing slightly above the standard. Besides, "informal interview" refers not to the clothing, but to the style of the meeting. If you show up as you described, you are going to be projecting the image that you don't care. Not exactly a good fit for the primate center, right?

The best thing to wear for an informal interview is a Batman outfit. Go buy a replica suit and go to your interview, this shows you are confidant and should any joker try not paying, you will destroy them!

There is no such thing as a " informal interview" . You will still be judged by dress. Informal usually means no coat. But a white shirt and tie , with dark slacks is advisable
