I just love making homemade Christmas presents. One year my husband and I made bird feeders and they were so easy to make. We got some of that (they call it cloth or plastic) window screen. It comes in rolls. It will make a ton of feeders. You cut the screen a bigger than you wish the bottom of the feeder to be. You cut 4 small strips of wood (as deep as you wish the feeder to be) to form a square (ever how big you wish the feeder to be). You nail or staple the sides together. Spray paint. Then for a little extra. Paint or stencil Christmas or winter decorations on the sides.
Then you staple the screen to the bottom of the feeder boards and for a little extra holding power staple four thin strips to the bottom to hold the screen in place.
Use some eye hooks on each corner and attach heavy cord bringing it up to the center and tying it in a knot then bring it up higher to leave enough for hanging.
I added a small sandwich bad of bird feed tied with a Christmas ribbon for a special touch.
Everyone loved them.
pinkstuff.
PS this year we are making three legged stools with designs painted on them and if I don't get started they will be for next year LOL!!!!

food stuffs are cheap to make and can be really effective, how about biscuits, chocolates (truffles are easy to do and seem like a nice luxurious pressie), jams or chutneys.
for parents (+ grandparents) how about a photo of the baby in a nice homemade frame - papier mache would be great for this, and is easy to do. can you knit or sew? (while youre panicking about getting all ready for xmas might nit be the best time to teach yourself!)
have you ever tried glass painting? use old jars and bottles to make vases or candle holders. youll have to buy the paints, theyre not super cheap but the stuff goes really far. and you can buy gold and silver pens which write on glass to make them look really beautiful!
think about wether you or your partner have any skills that you could use?
make some jewelery - im talking stringing beads on thread or wires, rather than soldering and hammering metal!

Make cookie/candy trays for everyone. Wrap them in clear paper with a bow. Put an ornament on the wrapping. You can get ornaments at the $1.00 store if you have them there or make them from a craft store. We have some kits at our local craft store for $1.00. You could also just buy the choc wafers in the store and a Christmas form and make your own candy miniatures.
Get a book at the library or book store (they aren't that expensive) on making jars with cookie ingredients or hot chocolate in them. Have you seen them? They are really pretty. All the dry ingredients for the cookies are layered in the jar and the jar is sealed and decorated. The same with the hot choc. You put the marshmellows on the top of the hot chocolate and broken up pieces of peppermint.

The baked goods idea sounds wonderful and has a very personal touch.
May I suggest looking for very inexpensive picture frames, perhaps, even some used ones from second hand stores. You can clean them up and decorate the plain ones. Nicely decorated ones could include, seashells, colored stones and pebbles, pieces of decoative bark, etc.
Consider decoupage plaques, with pictures taken out of magazines. Travel magazines are a good source for nature images.
Crafts can be a great, money saving, way to go, especially if you have someone very creative in the household.

If you want to start a woodworking project, you need all the necessary information, including schematics, blueprints, materials lists, dimensions etc. That is where Teds Woodworking comes in. The plans are clearly drawn and there're step-by-step explainations of how the plan should be done and put together. Go here https://tr.im/GBSWQ
There are several other sites whose collection of plans have the dimensions totally wrong without any indication of parts lists, material lists or the tools needed. If you're one of those people who have bought plans like this in the past, Teds Woodworking will change your perception.

congratulations on Fion, that's always a wonderful surprise. When my daughter was skinned, she purchased cheap red pots from the garden store and pencils from an office supply, then made felt flowers and stuck the pencils into a block of floral foam. Everybody love them because you could place them next to the telephone and always have a pencil to write with when you needed one to make notes. The items are really cheap if you go to the 99 cents store and buy writing pads, etc.,

put ingredients for cookies,Brownies or even hot chocolate mix w/marshmallows in a large canning jar (one ingredient at a time making like a sand art effect) print out what needs to be added (wet ingredients) and how to prepare etc and attach to jar covered with doiley or pretty fabric over top! I have done several of these and people really love them and they look pretty too!go to holidayfun.com for ideas on how to do this as well as recipies!

You can make fudge, cookies or cakes, if you dont like baking, make jewellery, candles, soaps, bath salts, picture frames, calendars, make bedding by dyeing cheap white duvet covers, you could also give vouchers for your time, so you would spend an activity with that person. family diarys are another good idea, put their life in photos, or christmas hampers. You can get small wicker baskets and fill it with inexpensive items they will love.
Have Fun!

Learn how to crochet blankets. You will learn REALLY fast... people love it! And it gives you a really good hobby that you can carry forever. I started a year ago with scarves and I'm already making teddy bears for my son 3 motnhs later. You can buy a cheap "learn how to crochet" book/magazine at Wal-Mart or any craft store.

Homemade Kahlua (many recipes on the net). Or, if they don't drink: go to garage sales or dollar stores. Buy pretty plates and candlestick holders at random. Us superglue to glue the candlestick holder to the center of the plate (on the bottom). Voila! Instant cake plate or hors d'oeuvre holder.
