Mostly, yes.
Unfortunately no political party has a platform in line with Catholic social teaching.
The Catholic Church is pro-life in the widest sense. This is often called a "Consistent Ethic of Life."
This pro-life stance stresses the highest regard for dignity of human life including that of:
+ All people in objecting to unjust war and nuclear arms. (closer to Democratic platform)
+ The unborn in objecting to to abortion, in vitro fertilization, frozen embryos, embryonic stem cell research, and cloning (closer to Republican platform)
+ The elderly, sick and dying in objecting to assisted suicide and euthanasia (closer to Republican platform)
+ Prisoners in objecting to the death penalty (closer to Democratic platform)
+ The poor and minorities in supporting social justice issues (closer to Democratic platform)
Some Catholics are enthusiastically anti-abortion and align themselves with the Republican party.
When you look at the big picture, the Democratic party supports more "Catholic" issues so some Catholics are Democrats.
Neither party follows all Catholic teachings.
For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, sections 2259 and following: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt3sect2chpt2art5.htm#2259
With love in Christ.

You believe what you want about your faith and policies. I can't tell you if you are a bad catholic. I do believe that the more involved with the church you are, the more you will oppose abortion. As for me, I oppose it, and I am agnostic. Don't count on abortion not being outlawed again. It could happen, probably not on a federal level but on a state level.
If you feel that poverty is a more important issue, then by all means embrace it. These are your decisions.

A candidate's position on abortion would probably be weighed into any voting decision by any Catholic. The weight of that issue on any decision would be a personal decision by each voter and some may weigh it heavily and others might barely consider it. The Church teaches abortion is murder and I don't think it unreasonable that the Church would expect members to consider the issue just like many other issues.

This would be a nice idea if there were any.
The government and the Church need to stay out of medicine. It's not their business.
The Catholic church has a provision against abortion already, it's called the 7th commandment. There are going to be some people who violate this commandment, we cannot legislate morality.
There is a provision in Church law that allows us to take life to protect our own life or the lives of others. That is the only exception to the law.
There are occasions when this exception would apply to pregnancy. These are the only exceptions to the 7th commandment.
Since this is already addressed in Church law, the only reason for them to be involved at all is to micromanage their membership's personal lives.
I think this applies to the Church and to the government.
It used to be that the Church and the Country had more respect for the privacy of the people whom they claim to serve.
We would all be better off if we were to respect that privacy.

You are witnessing a return to old line thinking in the Catholic Church, the one that never was happy with the Second Vatican council, the one that would like to go back to the days of dictating policy without question.
The one that would prefer to see people threatened with excommunication over birth control and divorce, than pedophilia in priests. Its one reason the Church has become increasingly the place of lip service instead of whole hearted support.
You are probably, in conscious a better Catholic in your concern for the least of our bretheren, as Christ said, than the present leaders, in their concern for our sex lives, about which Christ had surprisingly little to say.

Catholics are free to vote for so-called pro-choice politicians in certain circumstances: when both/all candidates are pro-choice or when the pro-life candidate is a poor choice for some profound reason.
Not knowing what election you're talking about, I can't comment on whether or not you were behaving appropriately with your pro-choice vote.
As for not outlawing abortion, what are YOU doing to fix the situation? Personally, I don't think outlawing abortion should be our goal. Rather, we should take away the DESIRE for abortion, and that comes from promoting life in all forms at all stages, offering to help women who are in crisis pregnancy situations, etc.

The Pope says abortion is murder, and they do expect all Catholics to vote for anti-abortion candidates. Abortion may become illegal in some states, if Roe v. Wade is overturned, as it should be. That decision was wrong on its merits, and is another example of liberal, activist judges usurping the power of Congress.
Vote for a GOP candidate next presidential election, and the Pope will bless you! You will never eliminate poverty, but you can help to reduce the number of abortions in our country. Also, you can reduce poverty by deporting the poor, illegal aliens in our country. Vote for a Republican next year!!
