The thing that allowed a large number of Victorians to go to the seaside for the first time were the railways. They made it easier to travel from the industrial towns to the coast. Many factory owners considered themselves to be philanthopists, and organised annual works outings for their workers.
An interesting fact is that the Victorians frowned on any part of the body being exposed in public, and so invented "bathing machines" which were basically huts on wheels, where ladies could change into their (full length) bathing costumes, and then be wheeled into the sea without going outside and scandalising the other bathers. Once the hut was in the water, they could emerge and bathe without anyone seeing their ankles !

You scamp! OK, I know a lot about Victorians at the beach. A major reason why people in those days went to the beach so much is that the railroad made it easy to go for just a day. Before that, only the wealthy could go on seaside holidays, because the trip took so long. Poorer people couldn't afford to take days off work. But with railroads, people could hop on a train in the morning, spend a refreshing day at the beach, and be back home by nightfall. It was an inexpensive way to get out of the city, let your kids run freely, and breathe the fresh sea air.
Of course, Victorian people wore those big heavy bathing costumes, which made real swimming impossible. Most people just liked to sit on the sand or play in the waves. Some women just liked to sit on the beach under an umbrella. Those who liked to get in the water, but were still shy would use something called a "bathing machine". It looked like an outhouse on a wagon. You pushed it down into the water, went into the little house, and changed into your bathing dress. Then you came out the other side into the water and splashed around. The people on the beach couldn't see you easily.
Because going to the beach was popular, business people made the seaside towns full of fun activities. There were restaurants and dance halls, amusement parks with roller coasters, game arcades, food sellers, and boardwalk entertainers.
My grandparents met at the beach near New York (Coney Island). I have pictures of her looking really cute in her black dress that goes to her knees and black stockings. She was in the water holding on to a rope, and ever time a wave came, she'd get knocked down and dunked. My grandfather would go over and pull her up out of the water. Finally he said, "If you drown, it will be on my conscience, so I'm going to teach you how to swim." That's how they met. Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs started at Coney Island. If you haven't had them, they are delicious.

You can talk about this box thing (it looks like a mini shed). They used to get changed inside the box and whell it down to the seafront and then swim out of it.
I think that would be really interesting.
