BOC is amazing, I love them. I think they are a highly influential band, just not as well known as some of the bigger names. They've influenced rock and metal considerably (and influenced a lot of bands that are into using science fiction and horror themes in their music, many stoner/sludge bands have stated as much). Buck Dharma is one of the best guitarists in the business.
My absolute favorites by them are: A Fire Of Unknown Origin, Shooting Shark, Take Me Away, Joan Crawford, Sole Survivor, Cities On Flame, Heavy Metal:The Black And Silver, I Love The Night, Eyes On Fire, and Burnin' For You.

Rush- 20% Heavy Metal, 20% Progressive Rock, 60% Hard Rock Blue Oyster Cult- 50% Heavy Metal, 30% Hard Rock, 20% Progressive Rock Rush has probably influenced more musicians over the years because they're more well-known Blue Oyster Cult, I saw them live not too long ago and EVERYBODY stayed till the end. It was just as crowded at 8 as it was at 10:30. Blue Oyster Cult- Cult Classic (if that counts) Rush- Snakes And Arrows Blue Oyster Cult definitely wins my heart more!

Disagree......they were good, sometimes great, but I've NEVER EVER heard ANY other artist being interviewed say that BOC was the reason they got into music. Nope...not even once. I've heard that said about the Stones, Beatles, Hendrix (all 3 of those I hate by the way), Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Kiss, Queen, Pink Floyd, The Who, and so on.....
BOC was a good opening act for Kiss back in the early 70's. That would have been a great show!

Whoa! Paradigm shift! I have never thought of BOC as metal. 'Course, it's always just rock music to me (damned labels). I fall down regularly when it comes to categorizing popular music. My personal collection has only two: Rock and Blues. Somehow everything fits for me.

BOC definitely influenced me. Their music (especially the first three albums) kicked me in the pants HARD. Then I got to hang backstage with the boys One Enchanted Evening; simply awesome.

They were among the forefathers of the modern metal sound, taking the heaviest elements of bands like Sabbath and merging them with the blues of Deep Purple and the melodies of the Moody Blues. That set the tone for what was to come in the early 80s with the NWOBHM.
I've never been a big fan of them myself, but I certainly appreciate their contrbutions to the rock / metal world.

Even though I think BOC has a lot of influence, I have to give the nod to Iron Maiden on this one.

"One Of The Most Influential Metal Bands Ever" might be stretchin it a bit though they definitely left a trail of smoke behind em.

They had their own sound and a great guitarist. Cities On Flame is probably my fav. (used to cover it)

I think they are a great band that are often over looked and stereotyped due to one song and their use of cowbell......thanks SNL........

My Favorite Songs:

E.T.I.
Harvest Moon
Mirrors
The Vigil
Cities on Flame With Rock n Roll
I Love The Night

Yes I like them and I guess you could say they were influential.
My favorite album is "On your feet or on your knees" and the tracks "The Subhuman", "Harvester of Eyes", "Hot Rails to Hell", "Cities on Flame With Rock and Roll" are my favorite songs from that album.
I'm partial to live recordings over studio versions of albums.
