Each Union soldier had a rubber poncho for a ground cloth and also a shelter half, two of which buttoned together to make a "pup" tent, and each had a blanket.
Confederates made do with less.

Soldiers on both sides spent time in two distinct arenas- garrison and the campaign (field). In garrison, which is when units were spending a large amount of time in one area or were in the rear out of direct action, the soldiers of the Union slept several (4-6) men in a wedge or Common Tent, or depending upon the time period of the war, in larger wall tents, or Sibley tents (teepee shaped) which accomodated several more per tent. As the war progressed, Union men were issued the shelter tent halves which were buttoned together with another man to form an open ended "pup tent". Confederates during the earlier part of the war often had similiar tentage in garrison. The Confederate government later could not keep up with the cost and ability to create tentage, so often the Confederate soldier did without tentage or made due with painted clothes as a primitive shelter. As stated above, the Union man was issued generally one India rubber blanket (ground cloth), one shelter half, and one wool blanket and slept directly on the gound, no matter what type of shelter they inhabited. If lucky, some used hay or straw to soften things up, or made makeshift beds from wooden slats "liberated" or procured from fencing or building materials, as did there Confederate counterparts.
