This is obviously a difficult question to answer. There is a lot of political pressure when it comes to determining an answer to this question. The antigay individuals want the number to be as low as possible to foster the idea that it is an uncommon abnormal perversion. Gay people want the number to be as high as possible to foster they idea that homosexuality is a normal variant.

Alfred Kinsey, the father of human sexuality research found that almost a third of men have a same sex experience by the time they are 45. He also found that 10% of men call themselves predominantly homosexual and 3-4% call themselves exclusively homosexual. His studies were done some time ago while there was still significant negative stigma attached to being gay so it could be argued that these numbers are actually an underestimate. In addition, his studies may be inaccurate because they focused on white males.

I personally believe that we will ultimately find that about 8-10% of the population are predominantly homosexual with an additional 5-10% being bisexual.

Hi,

This question gets asked a lot, and nobody has a true answer. According to "Focus on Diversity," most studies find that around 6.5% of Americans identify themselves as being gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender.

The site writes that "the total number of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in the United States is estimated between 13 million and 17 million, according to major studies on the group." That translates to somewhere between 3% to 10% of the population.

Another site, Urban.org, writes that "studies on the total number of gay and lesbian people in the United States show a range from 2 percent to 10 percent of the total population. In the last three elections, the Voter News Service exit poll registered the gay vote between 4 percent and 5 percent."

Of course, the percentage varies dramatically by region. The Seattle Times writes that 12.9 % of Seattle residents are gay. The city is second only to San Francisco, which has a 15.4% gay population.

I have heard gay men are estimated anywhere from 5 to 20% No one really seems sure. There are probably more gay men living within the concealment of marriage than those active and single or living with other men. And there are a very large number of gay men that emerge in their 40's and after leaving marriages. I think it is impossible to come up with any real numbers. Most gays simply blend in with everyone else. The gays you see demonstrating and in parades or the effeminant stereotype are pretty much rare exceptions. I have read of one possible marker though. It seems gays are more prone to be left handed. It is related to studies that show many gay men have brain paterns similar to women. And the same brain development is often also responsible for artistic talents and being left handed.

Some really great men were gay, Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar (some would say bi) Leonardo di Vinci, not to mention those 300 Spartans at Thermopolae.

It's fact. I saw it on Fox News a couple of days ago. 11% are gay. I don't know how they come up with it though. Some sort of poll I guess. That's why they can't seem to pass any laws in favor of gays because they're so outnumbered.

10% Max. If you asked everyone on the planet, "If you could have gay sex with anyone you wanted and no one ever found out about it who would you have sex with?" Even if you somehow got everyone to tell the truth, there is no way more then 1 out of ten people would be able to think of someone. 9/10 would just say, "No".

Figure I've seen most often is around 10%. Those are the people who could class themselves as 100% homosexual. These figures probably come from US studies, but are likely to apply to humanity as a whole.
